Career Advice (Part 2)

It's nice to know that lots of girls aren't sure what they want to do after high school, college, or for a career. I think it's fab to try a lot of stuff and I love the idea of career field trips, where you get to follow a person around and see what their day is like.

Here's the original question. Keep the ideas coming!

anyone got some advice for a student who is having trouble figuring out a
career after grade 12?
i can't think of anything that meets my likes! please help!

I completely understand. Everybody wants to know what you like - what your
"passion" is - but what if you don't know?

It gets even more pressure-filled if people want you to make decisions
based on your likes or talents. For instance, should you go to music camp,
science camp, or computer camp? (I, for one, am going to cooking camp since
I will always need to eat, no matter which career I pick). You might have
to think about this when it comes to choosing a high school, or classes to
take in high school.

Anyone have any advice out there? Is it OK not to know what you want to be
when you grow up? And how can you figure out what you want to do?

Hello. This is not good, you have to figure out what you are going to be. see,
look for careers and try to imagine them on yourself, what about being a teacher ? oh no it is not suitable for me, see what you dont like and what you do like.

when i grow up, i want to be a teacher. i have always wanted to be a teacher but it wasnt until this year that i realised i want to be a health and physical education teacher. they always seem to be the ones loved best because of their genre of teaching but my main reason is because it
inspires kids to enjoy life to the max. my P.E teacher has inspired me to do this but let me know i will still need to learn the other techniques of becoming a teacher. she is the best and i want her to know she means alot to me. yet another reason to become a teacher... to inspire next generation of kids!!!

I am 13 and I am not sure what I want to do. I think being a zookeeper would be cool. Or a veterenarian. Like James Herriot. I also want to be a stay at home mom and homeschool my kids so I'm not sure if I should waste my time going to college and maybe never work at a zoo.

Hey Pink Locker girls,
I've noticed several of you said you want both a career (see the above comment about being an animal doc) and kids. You CAN have both, no need to choose one or the other, in my opinion. Though it's probably true that one or the other will be more important at different times.

No one in my class know's what they want to be. I mean we all have DREAMS. But sometimes we gotta get a reality check. I mean... how will I be a singer... if I can't sing? So I thought of the things I'm good at.. and came up with; a chef, a magazine editor, a photographer, a journalist, an author, a teacher or a TV presenter. They all seem reasonable. So just think of what you want to be, what your good at, and what you would make you happy! There's no rush at a young age, but begin thinking! It always helps!

Well, i know it's really hard cause i myself haven't got any clue who i want to be! But you could think of things you like or seem to excel more at and obviously enjoy; like cooking? math? Geo? Writing? You know. If you really can't decide because they're all the same to you and have hardly any meaning, you could join more clubs or activities you've never thought of joining before and learn a lot more about yourself. =]

I for one undestand what u are saying. i find that it is ok 2 not know what u wanna b. that way u can have a variety of jobs to choose from. i would say girls are kind of more open to more jobs . by that i mean there is more of a variety really because u dont see many guys sewing or selling avon. but u do see girl doctors lawyers judges and carpenters just to name a few. so u see ive listed 5 or 6 jobs here that 100 girls could b interested in and want 2 try and u never know what u mighgt b best suited for or wat u will like best.! What I think is a good idea to help you decide is to go over your best interests and your best talents and write them on a piece of paper. Then you should decide which ones are your favorite and which ones you don't really care for after all. I want to tell you that you may not get the kind of job you might expect. For instance: My mom went to college to be able to work at a bank or something like that. She ended up with four kids and is great at her job as a stay-at-home-mom. She is definitely flaunting her own talent!

oh i want to be a doctor when i grow up, ophthalmologist to be precise....these are eye doctors. i was always fascinated by the eyes, they're clean and shiny, and beautiful....i love cooking too, but think about this: doctors can do cooking if they want to anytime in their homes, but chefs can't treat patients if they want to in their homes!!!

Well I personally love gymnastics, but I have the same problem. Sometimes I look to Shawn Johnson or Nastia Liuken to see what they try. I'm a pretty good gymnast, so what works for them might work for me! If you have a hero that has the same kind of interests as you, why not look to them for inspiration?
