Talking to Mom/Mum about your period

Hey there. I went to summer camp and when I came back - whoosh! - I was overwhelmed with your questions. Keep them coming and be sure to remind me if you have asked more than once. That's what R.H. did and I'm glad. I put those on the top of the list.

So without further delay, R.H. wants to know how to talk to your mom about IT, also known as your period. Here's her question. Notice that she calls mom "mum." She must be writing from the U.K. Awesome!

Hi Pls,
Good book. But i have started my period and am not sure how to talk openly with my mum about periods? Please Help!
R.H., 14

As everyone knows if you read the book, I do not have my period yet. But I have talked to my mom about other possibly embarrassing stuff, so here's my advice...

1. Find a good time to talk, like when it's just the two of you in the car.

2. Be honest and to the point, like "Hey mom, I got my period and I have questions. Can I ask you?"

3. Branch out, if you want, and also talk to older sisters, older friends, cousins etc.

What else am I missing, pink locker girls? What's your advice for R.H.?

Think pink!

Don't do it at a time that she will get mad or she is distracted. Maybe do it just the two of you at dinner. Think pink!

I was at the mall with my mom and dad when it happened! How embarassing!!!! I said that the last trip to the bathroom was interesting and she said why. I told her and she got all happy. So girls..... don't be embarrassed! If anything your Mom will be overjoyed!

I think you should do it when yall our out away from home or in the car because at home she might think my little girl is growing up or in the car you might say it before you get somewhere you will be embrassed afterward so if yoou say it while yalll are at a store so yall can go ahead and buy them see my mom would not belive me she always say you are still a little girl and stuff like that

I think you should maybe ask your mum when it's just the two of you privately. You could say something like " Mum I need to talk to you about something private." Your mum would probably say sure what's wrong or it's not a good time. If it isn't bring it up again later. Hope this helps!

What I did was:

Step 1: Plan what you want to ask, then practice saying it.

Step 2: Pick a GOOD time for both of you. When your mom is on the phone is not a good time for her even if thats when you have a burst of courage.

Step 3: Let your mom know what advice you need. If you say ' mom I'm scared of getting my period.' Thats not as good as 'mom I'm scared of getting my period because [blank] can you give me some advice?' If the advice she is giving you is not want you meant, say 'mom thats not what I mean really it's more like [blank]. sorry'

Step 4: End with a big hug and thank her for the advice and ask her to keep it between you and her and can you make up a code word for when you have more questions.

If you want to make it really the right time to tell your mom, make sure you too are all alone, like, maybe when you too are in a car ride or in a room together. And also remember, it's always okay to talk to your mom because she went through it herself!

Hi! I know I have the sorta same problem too. I didn't get my period yet but I want it REALLY BAD because most of my friends have it! My mom and I have talked about all that stuff openly and honestly I'm comfortable with that I just don't know how to tell her that I just want to have pads/pantiliners in the house. School is starting very soon and I would like to have them to wear everyday just incase I get caught off guard. Please Help with that and also tell me how when I do get my period I can tell my mom.
Thanks Alot,

I agree with Scared to Ask Mom. I actually have the same problem, but my mom already knows I want them. I just want to know when I'll get "IT". But I have some advice for girls: Don't be afraid to ask Mom. I am not lying, as she was once in your position,
and she's been through it too. Think pink!

I am going to school soon too and I like to be prepared for ANYTHING (hint hint). I would advise talking to your mom when she is doing something like the dishes or folding laundry. If you're scared, I cannot stress it enough: TALK TO YOUR MOM!!! I do when I get curious about anything. I really hope this helps you. Think pink! :D -Simone

i think you should start talking about it if she brings it up. or if you don't wont to wait that long so ask here something like this mum im just wondering when did you get your period like how old were you, try to say that at a time when only you and your mum are together.

just get it over with and say it or wait for the right time say in the car when its just the two of you.First you should practice saying it to yourself and be comfortable with that cause if you cant say it alound to yourself you cant tell anyone else.So get comfortable with the subject before you talk to your mom about it.Take a deap breath everything will be ok.

Well I talked to my mom and I haven't gotten my "" yet so what I do is when I'm on a ski lift or in the car, or just walking down a street with my mom I say something like- do you always get cramps or do periods hurt.

But if you got your period I'd just say, I got my period today.

My mom said that if I get it at school I can just tell her when I get home or something. You could also talk to your teacher or friend...

Whenever my mom is around my dad and brother are too, so it's kind of hard to talk to her alone! If you're like me and you need to talk to your mom about "girl stuff" you should write her a letter with all your Q's on it and leave her a space to write the answers! I did this once and it turned out perfect!

All of our moms have their periods, so if you are WAY TOO SCARED TO TALK TO YOUR MOM, then look under her sink for a pad and keep it in your locker, just so you can relax. If you have questions about "it" but ared scared to talk with your mom, don't forget about those older sisters, aunts, friends, cousins that are out there who know exactly what you are dealing with!

If You Just Started Your Period Then First If Your Scared To Tell Your Mum Then Go To an Older Cousin Or Sister Like Jem Said . See If You Can Borrow Pads Or Tampons For a Couple of Days . Then Wen You Feel Like You Should Tell Her Have an Private Conversation Because Remember She Experienced Her First Period Too !

Hey this isn't about the post above, but I wasn't sure where to ask Jemma my questions as I am new to this website. I wanted to ask What could I do to really cheer up my Mum?

My Mum is divorced and she works really hard and I wanna do something for her that will really cheer her up. I make her cards and pictures and buy her the occasional chocolates or gifts. I wanted to do something really different that she would love, any ideas? (I'm not very good at cooking though) Thanks x

Me/can i talk to you about something private
Me/Period stuff
Mom/Your to young.
Me/but i'm 11 turning twelve in Nov.
Mom/I don't care, your just a kid now you don't have to worry about it.

So i'd rather ask my sister.

SO here is what I did:

I saw some blood in my undies after peeing, so I cleaned myself up and went into my mom's bedroom. I looked for boys, no sight of my bros or my dad, so I said...

Me: mom, I think I got my period.
Mom: really?
Me: yeaah...
Mom: How do you know?
Me: because I saw blood in my underwear, in the front.
Mom: Yep, it sounds like you do! Was it a lot?
Me: no. just a little I guess.
Mom: Ok, well go get a pad out of the bathroom and put it on your underwear, if you need me call me in.

So I did. When I came out of the bathroom...
Mom: I can't believe this! You are growing up!
Me: I know.
Mom: I can't wait to tell nana! (her mom)
Me: really?
Mom: Yes! We are taking you out to lunch, just you me and nana!
Me: Awesome!

Now, when you get your period, just be forward and tell her. She went threw the SAME EXACT thing!

Yes, you are supposed to be like that. Because a lot of times girls feel like they get it "right out of the blue" Try saying something like this: "Mom, how old were you when you went threw puberty?" and she will probably say "I was __ why?" Or she might know why your asking her, and just get the hint. but if not say "Because, I think i have my period."

I got my period today at school and didn't call home so I'm just probably leave a note in her dresser. The big problemo is that my sister keeps on bugging me to tell her personally. Annoying!

Bugged by sis

P.S. Getting your period is actually not that scary.

My friend is 11, she got her period at school, (ugh) and she didn't have anything with her, so it started leaking out every where! Moral of the story: always keep a just in case kit with you!!

My other friend is 12, she is very afraid of blood, so when she got her first period, she fainted! No joke, I know it sounds weird and your probably thinking "yeah right she (me) just needed a story to tell!" but nope, it's true.

So, yeah, periods are a little scary, (really scary to my friends) so always be prepared!

I'm sure your mum will understand. I'll admit I am kind of in the same situation as you, except I am still debating on whether it is my big P or not. What I am planning to do (once I am sure it is the big P) is say to my mum, (or mom) "Mom can I talk to you about something?" and go on from there. Good luck if you are still trying to figure this out! :)
