Middle School Advice Needed FAST!

Hello all you middle schoolers! If you already have a year or more of middle school under your belt, this question is for you. Our friend Krystiana, 11, is starting middle school and she's pretty worried. Here's her question:

Dear PLS,
In September i am starting my first year of middle school, and i am sssssssooo nervous and worried.I'm worried i won't to each class in time, I won't make new friends, changing in the locker room and more.I am nervous about have 7-8 different teachers and if they will like me. So PLEASE can you give me some tips and advice about middle school. Thanks!!!

Krystiana

Don't you just want to give this girl a hug? I'd say it's true that middle school has new challenges: lockers, switching classes, more teachers etc. But it's also heaps more fun than elementary school. There are so many cool things to do - new clubs, activities, sports. Even eating in the cafeteria is more fun, I think.

Any more advice for Krystiana? Also, at your school this year, please tell me you'll be nice to the 6th graders. They need our help. Remember, even if you feel very mature now, you were once a 6th grader, too! For more info, read this article, Moving to Middle School.

Think pink!

I felt the same way when I first started middle school. Considering I am now going into high school... I think I servived. I had 4 minuts between each class and surprisingly made it to each one. It doesn't seem like much, but it's a lot longer then u need. If you stop to talk to a friend on the way there, make it short. When it comes to the teachers, it depends on them. Don't be the class clown and hopefully they won't hate you. Changing in the locker room was a little nerve racking at first. If you are comfortable in your own skin you really shouldn't have a problem. My locker room had a bathroom stalls in it. Idk if yours will. If it does, and u are kinda unsure of yourself, change in there. By the end of the year, I promise you will have all of this figured out.

*Hope I Could Help A Little*

What a coincidence! I'm starting middle school this year too. Instead of being nervous, I decided to be excited! I can't wait! I know all these middle school things will be so new, but I don't think about that part. Just chill. Relax! My plan is to make a great first impression. And, to get a "buddy" to help me through everything. Like, where to go and what to do. One of your "already" friends, who you can depend on.

That's what everyone worries about before Middle school. I'm now going into 8th grade. You have five minutes in between classes but during the first week the teachers don't mind if your five minutes late. In my school they have showers but a couple have curtains in some and you have change in there. Also they're stalls. You get a schedule and a school map so you can familiarize yourself with the school and teachers before hand. There are students coming from 5 or 6 different schools. So imagine how many people you will meet! ;)

I've said it before and I'm sure I'll say it again: You guys are GREAT! Thanks for encouraging Krystiana. I agree with what everyone has said. Middle school is completely do-able. You can do it, Krystiana!

Relax! Plenty of girls are worried about middle school (ah hem, me!) well actually, I WAS. My biggest fear was getting my period (yes, i'm ten but you never know) at school. But I have my problem solved. Any way, my sixth grade friend told me the facts:
1: Keep track of your stuff
2: Stuff a few pads in your backpack just in case!
3:Do your homework
4: Relax! It's not that bad.

If it makes you feel any better, I went through what you did. Think Pink!

If anything It should be a lot better then elementary school. I'm releived to know that I won't have to be cooped up in one classroom for another year.Good-bye grades 3-5. HELLO 6 Grade!!

Middle School can be scary, but it's actually a lot more fun than elementary school. Make sure you have a group of nice kids surrounding you that you can have a good time with. Usually, teachers know how nervous you are and can be a big help. Good luck!

Middle school is nothing to be afraid about. If you have a teacher you don't like, in about 45 minutes to an hour you'll move on to your next class and teacher.
When I started middle school last year I was very nervous about changing in P.E..
Changing in P.E. isn't a big deal. Just tell yourself "Everyone else has to do it."
And IF anyone has the nerve to make fun of you or your body while you're changing just say, "EW! Stop looking at me when I'm changing you pervert!"
This makes the person look like a pervert for making an obnoxious comment while you were changing.

In P.E. you don't have to worry about getting changed with other people. You are all the same so who really cares

I live in Australia and primary school goes till year 7, and I started year 8 in Janurary this year. I love high school! And if your worried about friends, all you have to do is talk to someone and be confident (thats what I had to do). You'll enjoy middle school ;D

This is my last year in middle school and I have to admit that was a little scared my first day too. But what helped me to overcome that is making myself believe that it was an honor that I was specially chosen for because I was ready. Think-no BELIEVE it in that perspective and you will have the confidence to get through the first day. Also, if your school hosts a pre-first-day-of-school-thing, then take it. You will be able to meet your teachers, practice your combo, and get your schedule. Don't worry if the work will be to hard for you. Middle school was mostly a breeze for me and most of my classmates. You will learn a lot of awesomeness stuff (and I am not lying just to make you feel better). Overall, middle school is just elementary school but better and cooler.
P.S. In my experience, don't buy all of your school cloths before school. Wait a week or two to find out what styles and sizes you really like. With our changing bodies, it is easy to outgrow your clothes before school starts. (At least easy for me!)

It's OK,breathe a sigh of relief and think about what you have to do then do it don't struggle with the 'what if,' just say I WILL (Ichigo's quote from "Bleach")and you will. Your locker maybe stuck or you can't do it, just think I WILL do it this time. I know how you feel because I started school a few days ago. The locker room is embarrassing, but as one of the girls advice was, "And IF anyone has the nerve to make fun of you or your body while you're changing just say, "EW! Stop looking at me when I'm changing!"

If your nervous for middle school, heres what I have to say: Look at it as a new oppourtunity. In the last week and a half, that's what I have found out, and many other things to such as: always have a smile on your face, it will get you in a better mood if your scared! And also, all you really have to do to make a friend, is by being yourself. Crack a joke! Say hi! Compliment their outfit! Ask them questions! And, I bet theres a bunch of other girls in your school who are just as nervous as you are. They probably want to make friends to. Just be confident is all I can really say!

middle school is surprisingly easy. this is my first year, and i love it. here are my tips about middle school:

1. Don't worry if you can't remember your locker combo on the first day. It's ok to have it with you, and ask for help.

2. I only have 3 mins to get to each class, and I have been late to my science class twice. One more and I have a detention. Don't worry about being late. You have to use your time wisely. And if you KNOW your going to be late, before getting your books, tell your teacher. I'm late because of this kid shutting my locker and then it jams. I tell the teacher and then she tells me to take my time.

3. Changing in the locker room is weird at first, but then you get used to it. I usually wear a shirt that goes over my underwear, so that when I'm changing no one sees it. This makes it way easier.

Hope this helps!

Stop stressing! My big sis just started her middle school year and she said it was fun. If you don`t think you can make your classes in time, you should get your stuff from your locker and go to your class earlier. If you want your teacher to like you, you should try your best in the work they give you. Changing in the locker room, well I don`t know much about that, but I personally think that you should pretend that the other girls are not there and change quickly. If you want to make new friends, you should open up and become frieds with other people who look lonely. Just remember, you aren`t alone! There are a lot of people who have the same worries as you. Good Luck in middle school! :)

Changing in the locker room when you are wearing a pad can be weird. Some girls I know wear like tight bike shorts under their jeans so that they can just pull their jeans off and they're ready for PE! If your school doesn't allow bike shorts, you can put running shorts over them like the pros do!!!

I TOTALLY worried the same exact things just before going into middle school. My bus was late on the first day and I was the last to get in. And then, I was put in a pod where ALL of my friends from last year were put in another. I hated it terribly and wished I was five again and in Kindergarden. But you know what? By the second or third week, I started making new friends who I hang out with every day now. I found ways to see my old friends and my life got a lot happier and I love Middle school now. Everyone gets those Middle School jitters. It's okay too. Have fun in Middle School!

I started middle school last year, and I was worried too. Middle schools usually have maps that you can get, and everyone gets a schedule. In the beginning, teachers will probably cut you a little slack, since you're brand new, too. If I were you, I would stick close to my friends, so if you were late, you'd be late together.

I have a couple more tips for you:
1. Make sure you have all your supplies for every class. And be sure to have lots of back-up pencils, pens, and erasers!
2. Don't worry about being popular! What does that word mean anyway? Everyone worries so much about being popular, but you shouldn't care! All that matters is that you're determined to do well in school and you have a supportive family! And once you have at least one really good friend, you're all set! You don't need to be popular!
3. Don't worry if your clothes aren't like everyone else's. If they are, GREAT! If they aren't, who cares? Everyone has their own style, and wears their own clothes. Sometimes it seems as though everyone has that "one thing" and you don't. Either because it's too much money, or you don't like it, or your parents don't like it, or some other reason...Why would you want to be like anyone else? Just be yourself and don't think about what everyone's wearing. And if you're especially daring, you can shop at cool boutiques and thrift stores and you'll be sure that no one will have the same clothes that you do! You'll be unique, different. You'll stand out, which CAN be a good thing, even though some people don't think so. Hey, maybe you'll even attract the attention of some cute boys!:)
4. If "everyone" is talking baldy about someone (teacher or student) behind their back, DON'T. JOIN. IN! Even if you hate the person, or you like them! Don't get involved at all because that's the worst thing you can do! You could get in trouble, so don't. Just walk away and pretend you didn't hear the conversation. And if someone specifically asks you for your opinion, either ignore them and act like you're busy, or just say that you don't know the person. If the "mob" knows that you know the person, just say you don't feel any particular way about them. Just DON'T GET INVOLVED! I have a couple more tips for you:
1. Make sure you have all your supplies for every class. And be sure to have lots of back-up pencils, pens, and erasers!
2. Don't worry about being popular! What does that word mean anyway? Everyone worries so much about being popular, but you shouldn't care!

You should not worry too much about having to get to class on time. My advice would be to find where all your classes are beforehand, so that you don't get lost. Also, if you know that in a couple classes you have a long way to walk, take your stuff for that class to your class before that, so you don't have to go back to your locker and waste time.
As for you thinking you won't make friends, a lot of girls (and boys) have those worries! If you've just finished going to an elementary school in your district that feeds into the middle school, there are sure to be other kids that are going to the same middle school, probably even your friends. If that's not the case, you're sure to make new friends! A tip that works for a lot of people is joining a cool club or sport or activity that you enjoy. You are sure to find other people in that group and since you have common interests (um, you're in a club that you chose yourself, right?), you're sure to make friends!
Changing in the locker room is not that big of a deal! There are only going to be other girls in there, and they're going to be so worried about changing before the bell or thinking that other girls might see them that they're not going to look at you! If you're still worried, you can always go into a bathroom stall (they should have bathrooms inside or near the locker rooms; if the bathrooms are not inside the locker rooms, get permission from a teacher first) and change in there if you feel uncomfortable.
Teachers in the 6th grade are very careful with students. They should be very nice because they know how hard of a transition it can be! After all, they've gone through the same transition themselves! Some of them will give tips on surviving in middle school and getting good grades in their class during the first couple days!! They probably won't assign homework unless it's homework about getting to know you. Most teachers play "get to know you" games and share things about themselves the first few days (or couple weeks). And you can always go up to a teacher during a break or whenever you have time to ask them for tips in getting a good grade in their class, or anything else about middle school! Teachers are sure to help because they know how difficult it can be!
And don't worry about the "scary" 7th and 8th graders! Most of them are not scary at all! They remember what it likes to be a scared 6th grader in a new school. They can help you get used to a new school with good advice! Some schools even have what's called a Peer Mentoring program. If you're having an especially hard time adjusting, you can ask one of your teachers to recommend you for this program (if your school has one). Basically, it's responsible 8th graders helping 6th and 7th graders adjust and help them get organized, give them good advice and tips, or just have fun with them by playing games to get their mind off of things. And if you're seriously scared of 7th and 8th graders, the good news is that most schools separate the different grade levels! The only place you'll see people in other grades is at school assemblies and on the bus (and if you carpool, even better!).
Don't worry too much! Your teachers and principals are sure to help you along the way, and although middle school may seem scary now, soon you'll look back and think how silly you were being and know that middle school is just one small step in becoming an adult! Trust me, middle school is super exciting and can even be an enjoyable experience if you let it be! Don't worry too much; before long, you'll be having so much fun that you'll forget about it being a "big transition".
Good luck in middle school! I hope you enjoy this next big step in your life!
