Jess needs our help!

Today's question is a tough one.

Dear Jemma:
I am a bit overweight and i don't know what to do all the people in my class make fun of me.
Jessica, 13

I get pretty upset thinking about people making fun of Jessica. Though we have some control over the way we look, it's very hard when people criticize you for something like body shape. Here's my best advice for Jessica:

1. Get help figuring out if you are actually overweight. You can get an idea by using a BMI calculator. It can help to have a parent help you with this. Don't panic if your BMI score puts you in the overweight category. It's just a piece of information that will help you, your parents, and your doctor figure out what to do next.

2. Talk to your doctor. Lots of kids talk to the doctor about their weight. If you are not at a healthy weight, your doctor can suggest steps to take. And if your weight is OK, your doctor can tell you that, too.

3. Know you are not alone. Kids can't do it alone when it comes to eating healthy and getting enough exercise. Those two things are really important! Your parents, other family members, doctor, and others can be part of the team that helps you reach a healthy weight. And don't go it alone when it comes to people making fun of you. Tell a parent or a teacher. Ask your friends for advice and support.

4. Be healthy either way. Whether someone is overweight or not, they will be healthier if they do simple things like ...
Take a walk, jump some rope, ride your bike, or chase your little brother (or sister, or dog) around the park. Also cut down on the amount of time you spend watching TV and using the computer. Hey, you're using the computer right now! Promise me, you'll take a break soon and move around. Here's my favorite activity tip: DANCE PARTY! Turn on your favorite music and dance around your room. Let other people (pets included!) join in.

I'm a little over weight. Last time I tried to lose weight I went kinda crazy, I stopped eating break fast and sometimes lunch and would have 3 leafs of lettuce with low fat salad spritzer. Yes I lost weight BUT it was NOT healthy what I was doing, one morning my mum saw I only had a bite of my apple and put it in the bin, she said I needed to stop and I cried.

1. Because SHE and the rest of the world told me to lose weight so what did she want now? Me to put it back on?

2. I knew it was becoming a problem and I did not want to face it because for once I loved my self in a bikini.

But now I just do belly dancing! You can learn it online from videos on youtube. And it also makes my feel kinda sexy. LOL
Also the ladies that show you how to do it hardly ever have a perfect slim body and they teach you how to be healthy and to exercise your stomach muscles, they exercise theirs all the time and they don't look like models, yet they love their bodies and show them off!

You sould just ignore them.If they make fun of you,they are probably inscure about the way they look.PS.If they see it doesn't bother you they stop.I hope this helps.Your fine the way you are.

There are tips on how to be fit at kidshealth.org and mypyramid.gov. Make half your grains whole and remember to eat lots of fruits and veggies. Try to cut down on sweets, but you can have some once in a while. Also try different active hobbies that are fun.
There are things you can do like:
1. Dancing
2. Volleyball
3. Swimming
4. Hiking
5. Biking
and a ton more! Remember that you are beautiful the way you are, and it matters more on the inside anway. When people make fun of you, look them in the eye and say "Knock it off." If the harassing continues, alert an adult. Hope this helps!

I am a little overweight and get picked on by kids but I just smile at them and make them think it doesn't bother and if you exerscise it will help

im overweight too. but all i do is hang out with my friends and nobody bothers me

so just try to hang with ur frends and then dont worry about the bullies cuz if ur around ur frends and they bully u if u have real frends theyll stick up for u

im a fraction overweight. it sucks to be a bit overweight. we look up to models that have the perfect bodies and then we look at ourselves. Its a disgrace! Being overweight isnt too bad but knowing everyone is watching you 24/7 isnt a supportive thing. i guess its something us girls need to learn... we are beautiful!!!

i'm overweight and i lost about 5 pounds by riding my bike to school. it helps you get excercise and it helps the planet by creating less Co2 emissions! you can't do this in the winter so try to sign up for like a local gym of something. my family used to belong to Snap and we'd all go early in the mornings on friday.

I think that it's great that you've realized that when you hit puberty, your body changes and you do grow and get taller. This seems to help one "thin out". But, also remember that a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise, a nutritious diet, and plenty of sleep , will help you feel good and maintain a healthy weight into adulthood!

Try to eat alittle bit smaller portions than you usally do and if that doesn't work try eating more healthy foods.

even people in pictures that look absolutly perfect on the outside their not! the people who take the pics fix their body weight on a computer do you think everyone that looks awesome on tv really is? no! they are not so just ignorer them i know i cant get a guy and im not overweight! I dont know why people have to be so mean do you? you look fine the way you are bye!

You should love the body you are in. Don't try to diet because that is very unhealthy for your body. Don't try to lose or gain weight. You should enjoy the life you're in, not overdo it. Believe me I've tried. Don't try to skip a meal to help weight loss. I've tried that too. It's very unhealthy for you. Just get on with your life the way that it should be.

well i have the same problem but eat less and if u ask how well all u have to do is drink lots of water before u eat! because water is heathy and it fills u up so u eat less!

I always thought i was overweight. BUT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT IT'S NORMAL AT THIS AGE!!!!! all u have to do is eat healthier AND EXERSICE!!

IT DOSEN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE OVERWEIGHT I WAS OVER WEIGHT ONCE BUT NOW I AM NOT.HERE ARE SOME TIPS:

1)GET AT LEAST 60 MINUTE'S OF PHYSICAL EXCERICSE.(JUMPING JACKS,SIT UPS.ETC)

2)EAT ALL OF YOU VEGGIES I KNOW THEY ARE HORRIBLE BUT THEY REALLY HELP ESPECIALLY SALAD'S.EAT SALADS AT LEAST TWICE A WEEK

3)GO FOR 30 MINUTE WALKS EVERYDAY

4)DON'T JUST SIT AROUND WATCHING TV OR IN FRONT OF A COMPUTER GO OUT FOR JOGS OR WALKS

5)IF YOU LIVE CLOSE TO YOUR SCHOOL WALK INSTEAD OF RIDE OR CARPOOL

6)BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP DO 10 EXCERCISES

7)IT IS OKAY TO EAT ICECREAM OR PIZZA AT LEAST TWICE EVERY SIX WEEKS.

P.S.:YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL JUST THE WAY YOU ARE AND ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL NO MATTER WHAT PEOPLE THINK EVEN IF IT IS FAMILY OR FRIENDS

You should wear cloths that tone down what you don't want to be noticed, and make noticeable what you DO want to be noticed, like those beautiful eyes,or that darn good looking hair!(For tips on this get The Body Book by Nancy Rue)

don't worry about your weight i never do and i never had any trouble, if anyone says anything i just say that they are jealous and a bit of weight about you isn't hath handy when your playing hockey i find it brill i got on the A team because no one was brave enough to tackle me :D

Help! Im a little over weight and I have noticed that our school quaters are changing and gym is getting closer which means Swimming! And Im getting stretch marks, Yikes. I only have like 4 but there very little and light pink. not very noticeable But I dont want them, any way to get rid of them?

Jemma is alright. But theres another thing you should do:

Ignore them, try to find friends that dont care about your body. The guys in your class are stupid and #4€@!. Just dont care about them, if you want to be a little bit less fat...its OK but IGNORE thoso people. They dont know how good person you are.

Don't compare yourself to models. That's why lots of people think they're fat. There isn't a signle person at my school that is "fat." Yet again, my school only has 45 people.

Don't worry, try to put some exersize into your day and if people be mean to you just smile at them. Don't stop eating though i'd just eat but eat balenced

everyone is beautiful the way they are, don't try to diet or anything. it's really unhealthy, trust me. you want to lose weight? DO NOT DO IT THROUGH DIETING. i've seen abnormally thin people and i think that people who are a bit overweight look WAY better. no joke, they look healthier and, quite frankly, ALIVE. try making fun of them back, they might back off. ignoring them works too. hope this helped (even though i'm really late in posting this xD)

well yes i reall am i tried the BMI thing and Making a change thing today.i am 11 and i got weighed in gym(in august)but its feb. i was 218lb. then i havent weighed myself since then.i feel uncomfortable changing for gym9WE HAVE TO) plz help me!!!!!
p.s.i waited last to get weighed in gym because i knew i wouldnt like it&&6th grade girls have big mouths so i didnt want ANYONE to know

Just be yourself and dont worry about your weight!!! Who cares what everyone else says because everyone is different shapes and sizes. That is what makes us people!! Make sure you are eating healthy and dont eat too much food. :D

No one is really, really fat. I have this girl in my grade and she's fat. Guess what? Unlike your friends, we don't make fun of her! I consider myself to be padded as well. I should eat less cakes.
P.S. call me a teacher but, eating a balanced diet will make you stronger, fitter and healthier.

Hi, it's Jess again! Finally after months of trying to lose weight, I have finally lost it :) Thanks so much for the supportive comments without them I wouldnt be able to lose my weight. Everyone who has a weight problem follow what Jemma told me. Just to say I am not being made fun of those so called "friends" and I have finally found friends who appreciate for who I am. Thanks again Guys!

DO eat loads of fruits, veggies, and whole grains.
DON'T eat junk food every day.
DO work out.
DON'T diet.
