Question #69: TV time with Mom = awkward
Today's question is also taken out of order because we're granting another request. Isn't it interesting how so many girls share the same questions about stuff?
Today's asker is Anna, who has a TV dilemma. Anyone else out there get a wee bit embarrassed when watching certain shows or movies with parents?
Dear PLS,
I want to watch this really popular TV show. But, my mom wants to watch it with me to make sure there isn't too much 'inappropriate content'. I don't really care if she watches with me, but I'm scared she's going to 'talk' to me about some of the stuff. :-(
Anna, 12
OK, I think parents fall into different categories on this. Some will make a joke of the "inappropriate stuff" and others will want to have a serious talk about the stuff. Probably some would just ignore it. In Anna's case, her mom must be a talker.
What I would do is just be honest and say, "Mom, talking about that stuff makes me uncomfortable" or "Can we talk about that after the show is over?"
When it comes to figuring out what's OK for you to watch, you might want to use this site called Common Sense Media. You can get an idea of what kind of stuff is in a movie or show, such as violence, swearing, lovey-dovey stuff etc. They give age ranges for movies, shows, computer games, and websites. I know people who use it to show their parents that certain movies are OK for them to see.

Any other TV-watching advice for Anna?

Dear Anna, some parent does do that pretty often, if it is really popular, then you could share it with your mom as long as you think it is ok. But you could still watch the video online if you want to avoid your mom. Think pink! PLS
cool
See if you think your if you don't want your mom or your dad even to whach it don't you think there might be something wrong with it. yeah it might be good but it can also be inappropriate. And you shouldn't just try to aviod her because if she wants you to not whach it there has to be a reason.
Hi, this has nothing to do with that, but I really need help!! Please answer!
I was wondering if I am extremely close to my period because: I get extremely mad really easy, I cry for no reason, and I have stomach cramps. I do not normally get mad this easy, and I seriously NEVER cry, even when I get hurt I don't cry. I heard you can feel like this when you get your period, but can it happen before you get it? Please answer I would REALLY appreciate it!
ya i know it can happen before ur period because i have those symptoms and more
im pretty sure you will be able to tell when u do have ur period
good luck

Anna, don't stress just leave her to watch it,she's seen it all before! And in true fact she probably does this coz she cares about you a lot. Also I feel the samee way right now my mum does this but i''ve learnt is okay xxxx
good luck hun xxx
Just tell her before you watch it that is there any way she could talk about he show "after" it has ended. My mom only speaks Russian but I like TV shows in english but when she watches them with me she asks me to translate so I just tell her I want to watch in peace.
Try to show her that you understand the things that she wants to talk to you about. Like for instance if she thinks certain things in the show might be a bad example just make sure she knows that you know not to do whatever the bad thing was in the show. Hope i Helped!
I hate that too! Whenever I'm watching Friends on e4 my mum comes in my bedroom and says all stuff about "you better not be learning anything from thus!" honestly! mums!! All I do is just either
1.change channels and when she goes turn over the channel again!!
2.just nod and say" yeah sure!"
Easy!
don't worry its the same way with me and my mum!!she doesn't really care about that kind of stuff because she knows she can trust me.If your mum trusts you...you'll be fine!! :)
Omg... i love That 70's Show... but so does everyone else in my family! don't worry... just be like, Mom i get it, you don't have to tell me! :P
Hope this helps,
<3XOXOX<3
I love my mom and know that whenever I spend time with her to make the most of it...and whenever we get mad at each other i get really upset and go apologize quickly, i don't want her to stay mad at me.:)
haha i watched Big with my mom today and this girl totally did some awkward stuff..... I just looked away and was like IM GOING TO THE BATHROOM! haha twas sooooo obvious
TV time with Mom= not awkward at all! I watch tv with my mom all the time, and it's not awkward at all! If she does talk to you, pretend it's a regular conversation! I don't really know what the problem is, though...
go with the flow
I think Common Sense Media is good, but sometimes they're a little unrealistic. One review of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2 said that 17 year olds MIGHT be allowed to watch that. I disagree. So just putting that out there.
I love watching movies with my mom but she criticizes all the characters
I am kind of glad that I went onto common sense media. I had just gotten this movie and was going to watch it with my little sister but the site said it had extreme sexual content so I just brought the movie back.
Well I have a question! How old is this website meant to be for because I am 9 and an early bloomer and want to know what older girls have been through
Seeya!
