Sophie and her pony

Don't you just adore horses? Our friend, Sophie, really loves horseback riding and she's worried about something unusual - outgrowing her horse. The trouble is that Sophie is growing taller. Let's try to help!

Hey PLS,
i have a problem. i'm getting tall. very very very tall. i am starting to not fit on my pony anymore and it makes me sad. she is a medium. i know that my mom stayed on her small til her feet were dragging the ground but im still worried.

i am only ten and i am a size eight in women's shoes. i have huge thumnails apparently and that means im going to get tall. i'm starting to hit puberty accourding to mom and i have already had two growth spurts. the direction that this is going in is that i'm worried im going to get too tall to ride anymore... i know that is silly sounding bc there are tall horses out there but. anyways please answer my questions because i have asked alot,
Sophie, 10

First off, you're definitely not alone when it comes to worrying about height. Lots of girls write in about this. Some feel too tall, like you. Others feel too short. Keep doing what you love - in this case - riding horses. Can you talk to your mom about your worries about your pony?

Also, check out this article for good information about height.

Feeling Too Tall or Too Short

What else girls? Any advice for horseback rider Sophie?

Even when you get to big to ride your pony, it doesn't mean you can't still be with her and love her!

I love riding horses, but I'm 5ft 6", so I'm pretty tall for the English ponies I'm probably going to be forced to ride this summer unless they got rid of their Hanoverian. Hanoverians are great horses, you should consider looking into buying one once you outgrow your pony. Keep him for driving, though. You don't want him to end up at a slaughterhouse. Not to put in a negative note ,there..

You can always keep your old horse but get another one and name it cute and still take care of both! Don't worry! im nearly 6 foot and my boyfriend IS 6 foot and we are both in 8th grade. LOVE your height! Tall girls most likely become supermodels!

Heaps of riders outgrow their mounts, but if it makes you feel any better I have had to lose my old 14.2 Quarab because I outgrew her and I had advanced from her level. She was a great jumper for a Quarab (I did 1m 20 courses on her) but eventually I had to face the truth. We sold her to a good friend of ours so I can still see her sometimes. Is there someone like a friend who might be interested in buying your pony off you? then you can still see her and move on to a different horse.

I'm sorry that you feel that way. Just enjoy doing what you love, which would be riding your pony, and don't worry about it too much. If you are feeling really bad about it, talk to your mom. And even if you outgrew your pony, that doesn't mean that you can't take care and love her still. Hope this situation gets better for you!

Don't feel bad. I am nine and I wear women's size 6 to 7. I can't wait until my mom can not find flat shoes. I will be wearing heels very proudly.

Don't feel bad about your pony. You might not be able to ride it, but I am sure you will still be close to your pony.

Good Luck!
