Question No. 13: Eryn says boo to bras!

Some girls beg for a bra. Others say boo. That's Eryn. She's 11 and doesn't like them one bit.

Did you have to warm up to bras? If so, let's give Eryn some advice.

Dear PLS,
I JUST started wearing a bra. (Do you see my age?!) And, I don't like it! What do I do?
Eryn, 11

I think Eryn is an "early bloomer," which I know can be a little uncomfortable. Me, on the other hand, I'm just the opposite. I was anxious to get a bra and be just like the rest of my friends. But I get what Eryn is saying. She'd rather not have this new bother.

My advice is make sure you have bras that are comfortable. And if you don't like wearing them, skip them whenever you can, like on the weekends. A sports bra or camisole can take the place of a bra and be more comfortable, too.

Any other bra advice for our friend, Eryn?

Think pink!
Jemma

Wear your bra all the time, so you get used to it. I hated my first bra because it was SOOO itchy, now I don't mind it at all, I can't even feel it. But if it bothers you after a few days, just try a different one. If you have a Justice for Girls store around, I would recommend an Oh So Soft bra. They're great:-)

Hope I helped!! And always remember, your not alone, there are so many girls having the same problem as you are!

I was an early bloomer, but more around age eight or nine, and I started out with a sports bra for a couple Of years. Now, I am twelve And were cupped bras.. Make sure ur bra is comfortable though. I once had an uncomfortable one, And it didn't make me like bras one bit! I also recommend not to wear a cami, stick with a bra, since boobs sag over camis for now just make sure the bra is comfortable try a couple out hope I helped!

I was wearing bras at 10, but i know people who were wearing them before that. Now, I am comfortable with with them now, i wore them all the time. Theres an easy way to get used to them and I know it sounds stupid but go to sleep with one on, then you start to feel more comfortable and get used to it. I wouldn't recommened a wired one until you get used to bras, so just stick with a non-wired one until you get used to them!
hope I helped! xx

For anonymous who posted June 28 at 936, if these r ur tue friends, they won't care. If someone says something about it, tell ur mom and u 2 can talk. And by u wearing ur bras and being confident maybe ur friends have the same issue and then will follow what u did.

I started when I was 9 so it was really itchy. But, if you wear them a lot you can get used to them. I used to shove them in my bag before school started and wearing without is just as uncomfortable.

I know lots of 11-year-olds that wear bras. I'm 11 and instead of not wanting a bra, I can't wait to get one! Try telling your mom that the ones your wearing are uncomfortible and ask her if you can try a different brand.

I don't really like them either, and I got mine at 11 too! But what I don't like even more is what my chest looks like when I'm NOT wearing one.You kind of learn to deal with it because everybody can notice when you don't wear one and you have boobs. I tried sleeping in mine so that you can get used to it.

Just give it time. I'm 11 too and I recomend a training or sports bra because they move with your body and they are very comfortable. Hope I helped! :-)

hey my name is rialda i am 11 to and i hate bras and all that stuff but what is the real reason you dont like them is it the feeling the itch or weirdness of it or is it the boys looking at your boobs
and if you dont like wearing bras then dont i mean you dont really need them if our boobs are small like mine wait a yae or a couple months and then try a bra. if you do try a bra choose a nice colorful one that suits you and one thta is easy to move around in i am sure you will love it later on .and like i said if it is the boys and having them look at your boobs cross your hands over your boobs and look them triaght in the eye.later on in life bras you will love you feel cute and girly

i know its hard but try as hard as you can to get used to them im 11 and i wear cupped bras the type i have r so comfy and alot like like training bras because they pull over your head and r made of very soft material apostrophe brand you can also take the cups out if that is more comfortable for u. i wore training bras for a while in 5th grade (im going in to 7th) when i probably could have been wearing bra-bras. for lexy i thought i had out-grown training bras because they were not fitting right and were not giving me enough support (like it hurt to jump because they bounced). i didnt have to get used to them partly because of training bras and partly because my breasts are big enough that it is uncomfortable to go with out them wearing them to bed helps as well.
good luck! :D

Well, I am quite the opposite of a lot of people here. I am 14 and I've been wearing bras since I was 11. I never needed them because I have always been (and still am) Flatty McFlat Flat. I am lucky if I can fit into a 32A. I started wearing cupped bras this april, when i discovered that i CAN fit an A. So, i say, if you're ready, you can start wearing cupped bras as soon as you fit into an A. If you don't like the feel, go for a sports bra. If you think that you look too underdeveloped, try fitting into a cupped bra. If that doesn't work, then try to find big training bras.
Hope I helped, but for all you early bloomers, be glad you're not 14 and Flatty McFlat Flat!!

If you are ready to wear a bra, wear it! Wear something that makes you comfortable in. When I first started wearing bras, I thought I looked ridiculous.. I thought my breast were too small to even wear a bra. I was embarrassed. Looking back at my first experience, I was shocked no one helped me. Not even my mom. If you feel uncomfortable ask your mom, or any other close relative =) Hope I helped.

When I first started wearing bras, it was nothing big.
I knew I needed one, so I said "Mom, can I have a bra?" She said "Of course. See if you can fit into Kailey's bras." I went into my 13 teen year old sisters room and looked through her bras. I found a 34B. I tried it on and I thought it fit. I walked by my mom with one on and she looked at me, I thought it was because I looked better in this bra. So later that day I went for a walk with my friends. We passed these annoying boys and one of them yelled out "Hey look, it's Betty Big Boobs!" and pointed at me. I was mortified and I realized why my mom looked at me weird. But I confidently yelled back "How did you know my name?" And walked on by.
I got home, and took off the bra. I told my mom about it and she said "the bra was a little big, hun." She then took me to the store and bought me some training and sports bras. They fit me a lot better and I walked pass the boys again. This time, one of the boys came up to me, and he said "Sorry about my friend, it is wrong to do that to girls. Truth is, he has a HUUUGE crush on you." I blushed. Then the one that had a crush on me came over. I looked at him, he stared back. And then asked me if we could go to a movie. I said yes!!

That's my story!

Girls, I'm 15 and believe me in 6th and 7th grades I was incredibly flat, i always thought that if I was a little rounder It would make me feel better about myself. I'm sorry now that I thought that way. I'm barely 5ft tall and weigh almost 100 pounds; but, lucky me, I have to wear size 32 C bras. You can't even get those in most store, I have to special order them. Please, don't complain about having no breasts, its better than having more than you really want.

So I'm 13 and I started wearing a bra at the age of 10 I wore a sports bra. I wore my sports bra to school and took it off half way through the day! That next day I told my parents I was very uncomfortable with it, they said well next time we go shopping we'll look for something more comfortable! So the next time we went shopping I tried on training bra and it was alright! A year later I was wearing a sports and switched daily with a training bra! My mom finally said let's go shopping for a real bra and it turned out the summer going to grade 6 I was an A34! It was embarrassing because all the other girls were so much smaller! That year I had a school field trip (overnight) and one of my friends asked what size I was and I told them! They said i was so lucky, but I wasn't.. Then when we got back to school our teacher had a talk with he class about that stuff! Sojist be happy with what you have!! I al 13 now and a B 36! So hopefully inwill stop growing soon! What ever you do DO NOT stuff!! :) you are who you are don't let anyone change that!

Erin you have nothing to worry about, their is nothing scary about wearing a bra but if you're afraid of the bra stabbing you just get a NO WIRE bra, but honestly their is nothing to fear because honey you are not alone.

For anonymous:

You liked my stories, and I already posted one of mine here, so here is my 11 year old (adopted) sister's story about shaving and bras.

She came home from a little date with her "boyfriend". She flopped onto the couch and sighed. I knew she broke up with him, "what's wrong sis?" She said "I broke up with my boyfriend because he said my legs are hairy." I hugged her, said "Aww! Well lets ask mom if you can shave!" She said "ok." We went and asked my mom and she said I could teach her. She started as soon as I taught her and she got a sweet little boyfriend. I also helped her get a bra. She is a tiny bit over weight, so she has breasts. I noticed her needing a bra, so I talked to her about it. She said "thanks for talking to me, I was scared to ask mom!" I got a ride to the mall with my BFF, and I picked out a trainer. I gave it to my sister and she was sooooo happy!

Anyway even if you don't like wearing bras you should bras are for to protect your breast! I hope I have really helped good luck bubs (: xx <3

Well, my mom thinks it's ok. It's just puppy love, they don't kiss and on their 'dates' a parent goes with them. My sister told her boyfriend she doesn't love him, and he said I know we are to young for that. So they are pretty much close friends. :) But your right, when girls our age like kiss and go on NO PARENT dates, it's weird!

Hi,just to tell you I'm 10 and I have to wear a bra aswell. At first I was excited but then I found it quite annoying. You should keep on wearing a bra because when you start to age your boobs will droop earlier than you should. If you find proper bras unconfortable, wear sports bra. They are comfortable and good. Hope you find this info useful!

A good suggestion if you don't like bras are Justice (check out www.shopjustice.com) bras; a lot of them have removable pads so you can start with a trainer and put the pads in when you need them - and minimize the amount of times you need to tell mom "i need a bigger bra" cause i know how that conversation goes, and it sucks!

Also, if you find yourself in that situation, measure yourself BEFORE you go to the store. That way, your mom doesn't try the bras on you OVER your shirt in the middle of Target to find what size you need. I know from experience.

Here's a funny story: My little sister and I share a room, and one time (when I was 12, she was 8) she had her little friend over, and both of them apparently decided to go through my bras and wear them down to dinner. I was pretty big-chested, and my mom and I were giggling at the sight of them looking like they had boobs. but the two didn't say anything, and acted like it was totally normal for them to be wearing bras this early.

After supper, I went out on the trampoline with my sister and her bff, who was apparently wearing my strapless bra. when jumping, the bra slipped down her and landed on the trampoline. she nearly cried with embarrasment!

two years later, we all laugh about it.

Hi i'm eleven and i started growing breasts at age 9! ( i wore a training bra at the beginning of fourth grade).
Once, in fifth grade, I went to this class for advanced readers (but the teacher is sooo nice). It was the last reading class, and I was fooling around. I was lying on the rectangle table, and a crazy boy said," Ewww, look at her, she hit puberty!" Then his other friend said, "Yeah and I can tell, too!" I just stated flatly (and blushed) "So? Who cares?"
Lesson: Don't be ashamed of yourself. You are who you are on the inside, not on the outside.

Hey thanks! Call me Cathy. Oh,I have another story...
Once, I was in the pool with a two piece swimsuit,(a tank with a built in bra and a skirt) and I dove into the pool. The problem? I didn't put the bra on correctly and it slipped! Anyone who was watching me could see my breasts! That was sooo embarrassing. And the story is true, too!
Lesson: Put the built in bras on correctly before entering into the pool!

hey, I am 13 and have been wearing bras since i was 9! i went on to cups when i was 11 and haven't worn other ones since! they are much more comfortable and are confidence building because they hide unevenness! i would recommend a plain bra with no lace so it is not itchy! when i was 10 i got a bra with lace and i only wore it once because it was so itchy! i have got lacy bras since but not with it going over the sides. I would recommend Calvin Klein as i got one recently and it is sooo soft!

Hi, one thing. For girls who wear training bras, the ones with full coverage (not the bra shape) because the bra shape slips (happened to me billions of times) and it also shows through a thin shirt that is tight.

Bra's are nothing to be scared about.Eryn I started wearing training bras when I was in 3rd grade. It felt wierd when I first tryed it on. But now it dosn't feel right when i don't wear one. I didn't even know what a bra was then.If you don't want any one to know you have a bra wear loose and not see through shirts. Once our school was doing a funrun and when I had finished I eas dancing the more I danced the more water was porn on me. My shirt was see through. once we had gone inside. my friend riley saw it. she started saying you ba wa bra?, over and over again. Hannah.

It deff is NOT a problem. There is NOTHING wrong with being a 36A, as long as the bra fits you comfortably. As for the sports bra, I never had one, but I would think a strapless one would be a little tight so it stays up, maybe ask your mom. I am not a fan of strapless bras because they can fall down and that could be embarrassing. Remember, sizes DO NOT matter! No one is perfect!

Also, try 100% cotton bras and bras that have a front clasp. They aren't as itchy, and usually are a lot wider than bras which tie at the back!Hope that helps all bra-wearers to be!!

@active101, it's GREAT that you do sports.

For the answer to your question, check out the blog post: The truth about what's in your bra! I'll reprint part of it here:

Truth #1:Playing sports doesn't' make you flat.
This can be a little confusing, but if you have less body fat (a good thing!), your breasts may be smaller because there's just less of you. And girls who are very active often can be in this leaner category.

In extreme cases of very intense workout schedules (think Olympic athlete), having less body fat can delay someone's first period. But most typical girls will benefit from playing sports and it will make their bodies healthier.

It's also important to note that playing sports isn't going to make your already developed breasts disappear. Someone said they thought this happened to ballerinas. More likely is that people who end up being great at ballet also have lean, ballerina-like bodies.
