Question No. 71: Where is her passion?

Some people, even though they're only in middle school, are already realllllllly good at something, like sports or singing or doing math.

That's terrific, for them. You might hear teachers and parents giving them compliments and telling them how they're on track to be INCREDIBLY good at whatever it is. So they might someday get a scholarship or be famous, or whatever.

But that's not most of us. I'm OK at lots of stuff and pretty good at running and I get good grades. But I'm not a superstar and I don't really know if I have found my "passion."

Hannah is in the same situation. Let's give her some advice.

Dear PLS,
My sister has always wanted to play the violin and she's been playing it for 7 years. My mom calls it her passion. I haven't found my 'passion' yet, and I'm afraid it's costing my parents too much money if I'm trying new things.
Hannah, 12

I think 12 is a good age to try things, so I wouldn't feel guilty about that. Maybe look for things that you can try without spending oodles of money. If you like to try sports, look for free classes or stuff offered at your school.

May I recommend running, which is a low-cost activity, and you basically only need sneakers and a good, safe place to run. And I also wanted to say your question was very well written. Perhaps you have an interest in writing?

Most important, I would try not to feel pressure about this. I mean, I've heard of people who are in college and still don't know exactly what they want to do! Keep exploring, trying lots of stuff, and maybe your passion will sneak up on you!

Think pink!

My friend's passion is drawing and other types of art. For me, whenever I read I forget about the outside world and my mind is only on what's happening in the book. But I like other things, like drawing, writing, art, taking pictures, and anything that has to do with wild life and animals.

I don't have just one "passion". I love cheer leading, swimming, writing, singing, dancing, acting, songwriting, running, gymnastics, and exercising. Never feel like you have to limit yourself to just one passion, because anything you love to can be your passion, even if you're not very good at it at first. I think running is a great idea because it's fun, cheap, and a great way to stay active and healthy. Writing is also a great passion because you can be as creative as you want and you can just journal and write about your feelings. I love writing and it has helped with a lot of other things in my life.

You can try different things, like to be a voulenteer. During the summers, if you want to do something you will love later in your life, be a camp counselor in training (cit). You help the kids know what to do. I like to voulenteer. I guess you could say "it's my passion!"

I really don't know what to say other than to have have confidence in everything you try, cause if your only doing to please your parents or just looking because you feel like you have to , then your mostly are not going to find what you feel you like. And another thing , having a passn for something does't really mean that your good at it,I mean I have a passion for math , but I am no were near a genus , I'm just really good at it after practicing and long hours of patience. When you find your passion, just know that there might be more that one, and that when your doing it, that you will enjoy it, and feel like that is the only thing that can make you happy. Trust yourself, and your instincts. ;) love

well "newbies" have to start somewhere too, right? When you did your first play, you were new at it, too. But they must have some talent or they wouldn't have gotten chosen.

Well you will find your passion one day.
Just try thinking of the things you love to do. This will make it easier to choose a passion. Your passion could really be anything, from playing an instrument to playing a sport to just dancing while your alone. And if one of your passions cost too much try doing it at school, cause some schools offer it for free. But dont worry you might already have a passion but you just dont know it. And there is no limit to how many passions you have. Hope it helped! :)

I LOVE to play the piano, I am awesome at drawing, I love to take photos, I also swim, play basketball, I read A LOT (a book a day), I love to write, I am awesome at poetry, and I collect notebooks (I have about 57.) But all these trial and errors (PILES OF ERRORS) I had found that I only like drawing. Try poetry or drawing. They're cheap because all you need is a pencil and paper. Think outside of the box!

I'm the exact opposite- I have so many things that I love to do that I could never choose a 'passion!' Stick with it, Hannah!

Think of something you really love, maybe its music, well try righting a song, do you play piano, try righting a melody and some chords... maybe your passion is designing, just get some paper a pencil and see if you like it, maybe its writing, get a piece of paper and a pencil and just write for a few minutes, you should try getting a journal, writing about your problems help you solve them. Plus its fun to fill up those crisp white pages everyday before bed :P

hope this helped,

I personally love playing piano and skiing. Finding your own passion or passions can be a Very long process. Trying a whole bunch of different things, and hanging out with different types of propel can help you discover who you really like and what you really Like. Some people have a single passion and some people have a variety of passions.
A passion can also have many different meanings. It can be something you are really good, something you love, or something that you want to improve at and want to keep working on. However you see 'passion', I wish you luck in exploring this wonderful world of various possibilities and remember: there's something for everyone!! :)

Dont worry about trying to find your passion. Just keep trying new things and keep participating in things you like. Also, I recommend looking into a 4-H club. You can do things with animals and other things like decorating clothes, making cakes, or even taking pictures!

im a horse back rider! :-D riding is super fun and kind of addictive! it also takes a lot of time for ur riding to become super amazinly fantabulous, :-) so u hav to be committed! but u should try it out, its very fun and u get to bond with a beautiful creature in the process! and also, if u find a horse u rlly like, instead of buying the horse, you could lease him or her which is like owning, but not as expensive. i started riding when i was 7, leased a bunch of horses, and now im 12 and the proud owner of my gourgous jumper horsr

If you haven't found your passion yet, don't give up! Some people's passions are more obvious than other. Try out some different clubs or activities to see what you like.

This might sound weird, but watch TV to inspire you. Whatever you think looks interesting. Basketball, cooking, modeling (Hello, Tyra Banks!), gymnastics, science. Then try new things. If you want to buy something you're not sure you'll like, rent it. And don't stress out too much. You're only 12! You don't need to find your passion yet.

I'm sorry your having trouble, Hannah. If you want to find out your passion, you could borrow things from friends or family. For example, if you have a school band or orchestra, maybe you could go talk to the director and see if he/she has any instruments for you to try. Maybe you have a special talent that you have no idea about!

Hope this helps! <3

Hi everyone! My passion is playing French Horn in my school band. I hope to get good enough at it to become a famous musician. I also play piano in my free time.

Does anyone else share my interests? I'd love to know! <3
