Question No. 72: How to deal with food allergies?

Eating is just something we do every day - no big deal, right?

Well, it's a pretty big deal if you have food allergies, like our friend Grace. It sounds to me like she's doing a good job of handling this problem. Do you have food allergies? Maybe you can give her some advice?

Dear PLS,
I have food allergies, so a lot of times I'm left out of things. My mom says people won't want to take me places because of the food. I've gotten used to not eating when everyone else is eating, but it makes me irritated when people complain that someone's eating in front of them, and that's what I live with. I don't want to say "Welcome to my life!" though either. What should I do?
Grace, 11 (almost 12!)

Hey Grace, I think you should ask your friends to read this: My Friend Has a Food Allergy. How Can I Help?

The message is for people to try to help you avoid the foods you have to skip. But that they shouldn't focus too much on your allergies.

Any other food allergic girls out there? What's your best advice?

My friend Natasha has very bad food allergies and can hardly eat any of the foods the rest of us eat. She also has celiacs disease which means she can't eat anything with gluten in it, and most foods have gluten so it's really hard on her.

I know that food allergies are VERY bad, and you don't like them but you can get used to it. I just have 1 food allergy, which is all types of nuts, it is hard to get used to it, because you have to read the label and sometimes at restaurants they don't say the ingredients so you have to ask. I know that it is hard, but you will get used to it. :)

First thing, I want you to remember I am 11 years old. I have an allergy to nuts, peanut butter, dogs, cats, and pollen. That is a whole lot of allergies. It is very hard to deal with them, because when i was in 6th grade, i had almost no friends. I couldn't sit next to them because of PB&J's. But, I survived and did i mention I have 6 other siblings with all those allergies? And let's not forget the fact I can die in 15 minutes if i eat a nut.

I'm allergic to tree nuts and its hard to miss out on all that fancy chocolate...but still, who cares? Next time before you go to a friends house, ask their parent what they are having for dinner, next time at a restraunt, ask if there is any certain ingrediants in the dish, if people give you weird looks, just ignore it!
Hope it gets better!

I know how that feels. Since I'm allergic to Gluten and Yeast, I can't really have a lot of things my friends eat. Basically, I either ask whats in it if its at a restaurant, read the label, or just bring something else with me. Even though when I started, they looked at me a little weird, but once I explained, they understood. They kind of help watching out for me on that kind of thing, like won't eat anything I can't have, but really want. And when people complain, just shrug it off, or just say, I have allergies too, and its so cool we have something in common. They most likely will get the hint. Hope they were off!

Dear Grace, Sorry you are allergic to foods, but don't worry because I am to. All you have to do is ask your mom to take you to an allergy doctor so that you can get a special medicine to that your allergic reaction doesn't become to serious. I am 12 years old so it is hard to get all my nutrients because I am allergic to all fresh fruits and veggies. All I do is cook them with different recipes. I hope you can find a way around your allergies Grace.

Im allergic to eggs and nuts.which means I cant have cake or peanut butter. but the best way to handle it grace is if someone wont take you somewhere you do something else fun. or if u feel left out make something like the food that cant have. [like for peanut butter, sunflower butter] and dont worry about the people who ask irritating questions they are just not used to allergies. hope that helped.

Hey Grace!! I have a genetic disorder that pretty much forbids me from eating any milk or milk products. It can be tough to deal with, I know, but once you get used to your 'diet', it's simple to follow. If you've ever heard of the resterants P.F. Changs or Red Robin, they are really good with food allergies. If you haven't, you could search them using an internet search engine and find the closest to you, and you could try those places. Hope I helped a bit! :)

I have food allergies and I hate them! I know how you feel but i am also sorta happy that I'm allergic to egg so I can't get a flu shot. If you want, you can ask your doctor about pills that can help you with your allergies so you can eat at least some foods that you'd like that your allergic to and not get affected by them for at least a little while. Hope this helped!

Don't worry I have an allergy that gets int he way nearly allthe time. There are some chocolate cakes, chocolate bars, sweets and bread I can't have because I am allergic to nuts. But I think there is a place somwhere in England where they give you a bit of what your allergic to to see if your allergic to it anymore.

my best friend's brother died of food allergies because he accidentally ate a walnut when he was allergic to peanuts. he also has asthma and sometimes when you eat something your allergic to you can have an asthma attack. he was a good friend of mine and i will miss him. he was only 15. i would advise you people with allergies to pay attention and if you have allergies AND asthma then carry your epi pen EVERYWHERE and ALWAYS wear your asthma wrist band

i have a food allergy too but what i do is i just really try to avoid the food that im allergic with and try to live with it. it can be hard in the beginning but once you get used to it, you can somehow accept it in the long run. just remember that there's more to life than eating the food you're allergic with. try eating your favorite food (the one you're not allergic with) when you are out with your friends and they are eating the food you're allergic with. :)

Dear Grace, I like you have a lot of food allergies including nuts, wheat, gluten, eggs and more so you can ask your mom to take you to a allergy aisle in a grocery store. My mom did and we found a lot of things that I could normally not eat it even tasted good. And also, if you go to a friends house you can always bring some food that you can eat with you.
