How do you open a school locker?

School is on the way and since this is the Pink LOCKER Society, we decided we better talk about lockers. First, how do you open one?

Practice makes perfect, so you can try this at home if you have a lock. Opening a locker is all about three things:

  • Knowing your combination - the series of three numbers that you have to turn to on the locker's dial.

  • Knowing which direction to turn the locker's dial and how many spins to spin.

  • Knowing a few tricks, like you can't go directly from the first number in the combination to the second number. You have to pass your second number once before pausing there.

  • Knowing not to panic. Before you know it you'll be opening your locker without even thinking about it!

WATCH OUR VIDEO to see how it's done!

Here's a cheat sheet. The sample combination is 11-17-23, like in the video. If you know your locker combination, you can substitute it in steps #3, #4, and #5.

1. Spin the spinner 2 times in a clockwise direction to reset it.

2. Stop at zero.

3. Spin it clockwise again toward your first number: 11.

4. Spin it the other way (counterclockwise), but don’t stop at your second number (17) the first time you pass it. After you’ve gone around once, touch 17.

5. Spin clockwise again and go directly to your third number (23).

6. Pull down and open your lock!

Think pink!

My 5th grade year (first year we had lockers) I was soooo freaked out about my combination, but they never rush you about your locker your first year. And really, before you know it, you won't even know you're doing it.

Two years ago, I was running late to class so I ran to my locker and tried to get it open. I was in such a hurry I forgot my combination, and I forgot where I put my paper with the combonation on it. I was freaking out. I felt like screaming. I was in the halls all alone and running so late for school. As a 9 (almost 10) year old would, I started to cry because I was scared. Then the school nurse came out and found me. I told her my problem and she tried to calm me down, but she couldn't. Then she decided to send me home since there were only 5 minutes until we went home anyways. She said when I got home to try and remember my combonation or to call the school and tell them. When I got home I emptied my bookbag and found the paper with the combonation on it. The next day, I went to my locker. I couldn't get it open, so I remembered what I talked to my mom about. She said to breath. I took some breaths through my nose. I calmed myself, and I opened my locker! So remember, STAY CALM.

It is really not so bad once you get used to it. I am going into 7th grade and need a lock for my main locker and my gym locker. So I need to try to remember two combinations. Open and close it each day until school starts. By then you should have the combination memorized. Also if you have a mirror you can look at every day, you can write the combination on the mirror. It will come off just lie dry-erase marker does. Good luck!!

its really simple i got one to practice (but the school gives us one). I'm going into middle school, 6th grade soon, and to do it its just right left right. I didn't get it at first but my mom told me. On the first couple days of school, don't be afraid to ask teachers or parents for help! If your school has an orientation day where you get to look in your lockers, practice the locks then. Don't worry! My brother is going into high school and he loved middle school!!

When I was going into 6th grade, they had sort of an orientation day where you could practice opening your locker. They gave me a sheet on how to open it. What you do is you spin the dial to the left until you reach the first number, then you spin it to the right past the second number and as you're reaching it the second time, you stop. Then turn to the left to the last number. Once you practice, it's easy! You can always ask a friend or a teacher for help.

Before I started middle school I was so afraid I wouldn't be able to get my locker opened that I practiced opening my lock every night until school started.
