Period Myths: Don't believe them!

When something is new to you, you're not sure how it works. Periods are like that for a lot of girls. Here are some of the common misunderstandings we've seen recently on the blog.

1)Period flow does NOT stop just because you're taking a bath or swimming. Some girls think this is true, but it's not. Neither "water pressure" nor the chlorine will prevent the blood from coming out. This is especially important to know if you're a girl who is going swimming while she has her period. You'll need to wear a tampon. Don't worry, it's not that bad. You can learn how to use them!

2)Nothing can make your first period come sooner than it's going to. Don't waste time standing on your head, eating certain foods, or believing any superstitions.

3)Just because your friends have their periods and you don't, that doesn't mean there's something wrong with you. Likewise, being the first person in your group to have her period doesn't make you strange either. It's always a good idea to talk to your doctor (or your mom) if you have questions or concerns. But remember that a first period comes about two years after a girl starts developing breasts. And that happens during puberty, which can start as early as 8 and as late as 13.

Do you have any other worries or questions about periods?

Think pink!
Jemma

To anonymous- (one above the last anonymous post...)
It is normal to just have a little spot. My friend said that her discharge got so bad (near the end) she had to wear pads some days. I don't really have strong discharge, sometimes just when I wipe that area (i know it's gross but it's true) and sometimes there will be a slippery part on my underwear. I think it's kinda like ur period... It is irregular and unpredictable!

Can anybody tell me when i might get my first period. I know that everybody's different but could somebody guess when i might get mine?

I am 13. I hair dark curly hair down there. I have had discharge for almost 3 years! I have just started growing darker curlier hair under my arms. I am getting more oily hair and face. I have had growth spurts and mood swings.
I think I might have started getting cramps, but maybe not. I have really small boobs though. I have breast buds but my boobs are so small I fit into an 8A or 10AA.
I think i started growing hair down there 2 years ago and my boobs started developing about 1 or 2 years ago.

So when will i get my period?? My friend is skinnier than me and has no boobs and she got her period before me!

Iwantmyperiod....

A) you really don't want your period. I don't have mine yet but I have a few friends that do, and they all say it is HORRIBLE!!

B) since your really do want your period, don't worry those are all the signs of your period, though it could depend on when your mom got hers. That convo could be awkward unless you are really close with your mom.

And that's where C comes in

C) your friend's mon probably got her period early (she probably devolved earlier since everyone devolves at their own rate) and it's in your genes when you get your period. It may sound weird, but it's how your body works!!

I hope this helps!!!

Ok, there seems to be a lot of questions on here about vaginal discharge, so here is what I know:

-vaginal discharge is just mucuous that is created during (and before) your menstrual cycle.
-normally, you have it for about 6 months to a year before you period but I had mine for 3.5 years so don't freak
-wear a pantiliner because it sooo doesn't wash out
-yellow, bad-smelling, green, or lumpy discharge could mean you have an infection so bring it up with the doctor

And...think thats it!

Anonymous Lillypilly said...

to anonymous and u 8 a bumblebee...

don't worry. your breasts are hurting because they are beginning to develop.

One of the first stages of breast development is you get a small bump beneath the nipple area, called a breast bud which does get bigger. The breast bud may be a little sore when it is touched or bumped etc. sometimes it even hurts sleeping on your stomach. but don't worry about it, it's a normal part of puberty.

You also get sore breasts around the beginning of your period, so this might be a possibility.

You don't get sore breasts because you need vitamins. So don't worry. Hope i helped!

I have some answers:

To anyone who has vaginal diacharge questions:
1. it can be goopy or ther can be just a tiny bit of it.
2. it can be white, clear, even a tiney bit yellow! (if it's brown or green, tell your mom.)
3. it can dry fast or slow.

To gymnast:
Why do you want to gain weight? I am also really skinny and at some times I accually sometimes also wanted to gain weight. espesilly since I don't have my breasts in yet, only my bud on one side, and you can feel my ribs through my skin. but I do like it when my bff calls me a human rubber band because I am flexable too. also i remembered that I would rather be thin that fat, it's more healthy. athough I still tre to eat until i'm full, but not past that or I get a tummy acke.

hope I helped!

I hate periods!(I just got my first one yesterday)Pads are really uncomfortable for me, but they seem more comfortable than tampons. I'm the first one out of my whole class and I think they CAUSED me to have emotional changes grrr. Since yesterday, I felt horrible. Being the one of the first out of your friends to start isn't all it's cracked up to be!

to anonymous with the meat/milk question:
no, eating meat and milk doesn't cause early puberty. those are both a main part of my diet (especially the milk) and i don't have anything more than discharge and breast buds and i'm in 6th grade!

Everyone develops at their own rate. Like the artical said, your period "usually" starts after 2 years of breast developement. I just got my period last week! I'm in grade 6! I'm the first out of everyone and I feel all awkward and out now keep getting mood swings because of it! Being a late bloomer is no worse than being an early bloomer! Remember, periods can start from as early as age 8 to as late as 15 or 16. It will come eventually! Trust me!

I have been getting cramps and headaches at any random times. Does this mean my period is coming? Im not sure because I am TOTALLY FLAT AND DON'T EVEN WEAR A BRA (sports/training bra) well i have breaat buds since 4th grade and there still there! but I have some hair "down there" only a little though. I also have been a crybaby this week, so I don't know what to do? Is there something wrong with me? Im scared if it happens @ school because none of my friends have started their period yet, well maybe because they don't look like they did and it would be just weird to ask my frend. What should I say if I want to call my mom because I can't just turn on my phone and call her because during school hours u can't have your phone on. What do I say if I need to call my mom? What if it's in the middle of class! I don't know what to do?!? Please someone help me?!?!?!?!? Anyone?

@ Claudia
It's okay, you'll probably get your period, but everyones different, I've been having the same pattern as you for a couple of months now, but I still don't have my period. If you need to call your mom, then you should ask the teacher to use the school phone (if they have one). If your teacher asks why, just answer with a short response, like... "Girl Stuff", he/she will understand and will probably send you to the nurse, or have you call home. Hope I helped!
P.S., I have a friend named Claudia, lol.

Thanks a lot Kelsey!! :) I thought that it would be coming and so far, no, but i hate getting these headaches and cramps! And I thought if my period is coming, why now? It's not that I don't want it, and not that I want it either, but why now, (If I did get it) because I think I might get mine at 12 or 13. The only thing I worry about it is that if I get it at school. You told me what to do in that situation :) but i just hope it won't happen at school anyways.... Well thank you!

@Anonymous9:28: HIde some pads/tampons in a makeup bag. I suggest Always as they are small and easy to hide. Or take it in a side pocket of a PE bag on those days. Even hide it in your sock.Thats what I did ( and do) Hope i helped: IlivedThroughIt

Hey Guys...... My mum is a Don't know what you'd call it But one of those people that come to your school to tell you all about puberty. But of course I'm her trial runner. So listening through all those things I know alot about Periods, The Period Myths and all that sorta stuff. And I am here to say that Just because you've got breasts and You've had them for ages doesn't mean that your period will be coming soon. I had breasts since i was about 8... I'm 13 now and I just got my period. I had all the signs that my period was coming when I was 9 and yet I only just got it about 2 months ago. The Swimming Myth is completely true. Sadly I learnt the hard way at my best friends 13th birthday. I was like ohhh it's only really light ill be fine this website says that ill be fine without a tampon the water pressure will push it up, NO!, After about half an hour in the water the blood came gushing out and my confidence was well broken. Also Vaginal Discharge is COMPLETELY NORMAL!! Even I still get it Between my periods. It's just Your Body's way of cleaning out your Insides.

I hope this may have help
Yours Sincerely

That is the start of your period! Get a parent or gardian to get you pads/tampons soon!

@anonymous who asked how to hide pads
You could put it in your boot or shirt sleeve. My cousin has a little wristlet for pads and tampons. You could also just keep them in your purse and bring it with you to the bathroom. Hope this helps you!

Help! I'm in the seventh grade ( Year 7 because I live in London) and I'm really short for my age. I think I've stopped growing because I was told once you reach your periods, thats IT. And it looks like its true, Im really losing confidence since everyone i know is taller ( even my 9 year old brother and Im 11, going on 12 in two weeks :( !!) The worst bit is, I'm kinda chubby ( or fat, but i dont mind) and its not a necessarily a good look on a short person... What do I do, plzzz? :'(

Don't worry anonymous! I just started in december and I'm never prepared either! I still don't get how it works.

Anyways, yes it's COMPLETELY normal to get your period earlier or later than your mom did. It's only sometimes that you get it around the same age as your mom. I didn't!

@ CherryTree x,
Im also chubby but im tall. It's totally normal for you to be shorter that others. I'm 11 and am taller than my best friends 14 year old brother! I've never heard that you stop growing after your periods. I got mine and I'm still getting taller. Did you know that in middle school (grade 6,7,8) you may be taller or shorter than people now, but you never know when you might have a growth spurt! My brother's friend was the tallest in middle school, and now my brother's way taller! Hold your head high and good luck :P

i'm 13 and i think i got my first period?! I'm not sure? So i have been experiencing mood swings, tender breasts, cramping, and pimples (lots of them). I went to the bathroom and wiped and there was a streak of brown/reddish blood on the toilet paper. There was nothing the next day. About 2 weeks later i went to the bathroom and wiped and there was a streak of light red blood on the toilet paper but nothing in my underwear. There was nothing the next day. Is this my period? My mom thought that it would be really heavy (her's was) but I read that the first period could be light?

Is it normal to have a light/regular day 1 of your period, then a HEAVY day 2, and back to light/normal for day 3? It's my first period so i'm not sure if it's going to stop tomorrow or get heavier...?
