Question 25: Do tampons hurt?

Today's question comes from Curious, who says she's curious about tampons. She's not alone, tons of girls send us questions about tampons. Why? Well, it's a strange concept at first. I mean I know I was like - say, what? I'm going to put that WHERE?

But the good news is that, when used properly, tampons are a good thing. Here's what Curious wants to know.

Dear PLS,
Do tampons hurt??? i am just starting puberty and i ride and love to swim...
Curious, 10

No need to worry. With tampons, you want to follow these rules:

1)Stay calm.
2)Ask for help from someone who knows how to use one (your mom, sister, etc.).
3)Buy the right kind for you. Slender ones are best for girls starting out.
4)Only try to insert one when you have your period.
5)Remember that tampons should be removed and changed every four hours or so.
6)Don't let your period stop you from swimming and riding!

And if you need more convincing, check out this popular post about whether you really need a tampon for swimming. The answer is a big YES!

Can you wear a pad in the pool?

Any other encouragement about using tampons?

Think pink!
Jemma

Well, I was surprised when I found out where it goes but I really don't think it will be a big deal when I get my period. I mean, no one would be selling these things for so long if caused as much pain and discomfort as people think. I only hope mine comes before summer. I have been blooming just a bit,I have had discharge for almost 4 months, and because my mom started growing all at once, I should have my period by my birthday this spring.

Can I go swimming when I have my period?

yes, you can Ashely, you just need a tampon.I would ask your mother and if she says no maybe she has different ways and won't let you where one until your "old enough". I don't really understand the whole story about why she says no but maybe I'm on the right track. If it's cause your not "old enough" then you should state your argument calmly. If she lets you wear a tampon then, problem solved!

Tampons only hurt if you dont insert them right. Ask your mom on how to help you with them but never put them in unless on ur period! <3

I have never tried using a tampon before, so I do not exactly know what to tell you.
However, based on what others say, tampons do not hurt at all! Isn't that great?
Anyways, I think some school restrooms have tampons and pads you can buy that are only a quarter. Just make sure you buy a slender one!

Get your mum to help you and guide you before you do anything. Make sure you read the instructions aswell before putting one in. If your period is light and you dont want to use one just use a pad.
Hope this helps xx

@ Anonymous, no you don't. Tampons are just something you wear on your period, like pads, but tampons go inside of you. So if you don't want to wear tampons, you don't have to.
Hope I helped!

I know it's hard when you start out, buy if you just relax when you put it in and take it out, it won't hurt and you'll be fine. :) After a few months of using a tampon it WILL get easier. I promise. I've been using tampons since I was in 4th grade...so for around 5 years. You girls will be okay. :) My mom helped me the first time and we used a mirror so I could see what was going on. Love, kitty
