Questions 26 & 28: 2 period Qs for Tracy

It's two questions for Tracy today - both about periods.

Dear PLS,
My sister is going through puberty. Will she get diarrhea or cramps in her period?
What if I don't have a pad or tampon when i get a period[like in the car]?
Tracy, 9

Good questions! Yes, sometimes cramps in your lower belly go along with periods. Your sister should definitely tell your mom or another adult if she has period cramps. Talking with the doctor is a good idea, too. There may be steps you can take to feel more comfortable. Bottom line: Your period shouldn't get in the way of you doing what you want to do.

Find out more about cramps at the link below:

Period Cramps

As for diarrhea (yuck!), it's can be part of PMS, which stands for premenstrual syndrome. That's a combination of symptoms that can happen 1-2 weeks before a girl's period starts.

Common Period Problems

And now for Tracy's second question about being someplace AWKWARD, like the car, when you get your period. It happens, but the good news is that usually you have a sign - like feeling something - so you can simply tell whoever's driving that you need to go the bathroom.

Part 2 is always having a pad or tampon with you. If you get caught without one, you can always stop in a convenience store, grocery store, or pharmacy and pick up a box. If you're nervous about asking, just say, "I have to pick up some feminine products." Most everyone will catch your drift.

Any other advice for Tracy?

If you get your period during a car ride, make sure you know when you get your period so you could put a pad or tampon before you leave.

I was worried about that too. I mean, just think about all the bad places you can get your period. The good thing is, you can always tell an older female in the family about what happened. Good luck!

Yeah. I've been wondering the same thing. My friend said you should wait, but that would stink. (Literally!)

if i were you, i would get a period tracker app or mark your period on your calender so that you always know when to expect it, carry around pads and tampons in your purse or have a friend that does, and you dont have to wait if your in the car, just tell the driver you have to go to the bathroom or ask to make a quick stop... good luck to you ;)

No one ever has their period in a good place or at the right time. I got mine two minutes after I woke up when I was on my way to the restroom. I finished going to the restroom and then I got my sister to bring me the phone. I called my mom and she came home and helped me. It might seem scary but I promise you it's not as bad as it sounds.

I had my first period in the middle of a basketball game. Everyone saw it. Know what I did?? I kept playing and we won. After the game I picked up a pad. It was no biggie.

No you usually dont have cramps in discharge.... & i got mine at a friends house and i told my mom when i got home and she went and got me pads and if your in a place were u start and dont have pads or tampons dont worry it should be ok because for the first time you prob wont b heavy so u shouldnt leak but bring a jacket just in case and if you start and leak just wrap your jacket round you and tell a adult you trust:) hope that helped your questions.. oh and you probably wont get diarrea but you are very likely to have cramps!

In answer to ashleys question, it depends, a lot of the girls in my class wear little warm- up trousers so that you can't tell if they are wearing a pad, but if you can I would suggest tampons for ballet, as the leotards are quite tight, and make pads noticeable.

Wow, that was brave of you! I'd have never been able to do that!

Good question!
If you are at school, you will oviously feel it. So, just ask a teacher to go to the bathroom. If you don't have pads and your bathroom at school doesn't have a pad/tampon dispenser, ask to go to the nurse instead. She has pads, I've done that before.
If you get it swimming at the YMCA, though, that's a bit trickier. When you feel it, get out of the pool and go to the bathroom, and try to get a pad there or if not, ask a fellow girl teammate.
Until then, don't worry about periods, because puberty will hit you when it hits you!
Hope I helped you, Christeen!

My older sister does ballet, and she still uses pads when she has her period. You'll be fine with a pad

Before you go on the trip, wear a pad and if you get the chance to stop at a rest area just change it.

I was like you once. I really wanted my period but when I got it I regretted it. You actually never really know when you'll get your period. There are some signs that tell you if it's coming soon but never the exact day. When I got mine, I had a horrible stomachache and kept having diarrhea. Also there was a time after I got my first period that I had an enormous appetite.

Everyone, you don't have to wear tampons for sports unless you are going swimming. U by kotex pads are very comfortable and I can do whatever I want in them.

In the car I would just ask if you can make a pit stop and go to the bathroom. Cover the stain(I assume that would be how you know you got it) with a sweat shirt or something. In the bathroom get the stain out with cold water and put a wad of toilet paper in your panties. Good luck!

I was at school and i had a one hour history class, that's when i just remembered that i forgot to put a pad on that morning. When i got up from my seat my butt was full of red stains! and our history teacher was a guy so i didn't know what to do so i just sat there in my seat. I didn't DARE to stand up because there was a boy sitting right next to me. Luckily, i had a sweater with me and i tied it around my waist so you couldn't see the stains. I wore that sweater for the rest of the day i don't think nobody noticed but what if that happens again and i didn't have a sweater with me?

I have been having discharge for about 9 or so months or more. What's the average amount of time you have discharge before you have your period?
