Questions 27 and 31: Two period questions for Maddy and Doremi
I hope, by now, everyone is getting the message: A gajillion girls have questions about periods! Here are two more:
Maddy, 11, says simply: I haven't had my periods yet. And Doremi (love that name Do-Re-Mi) asks this:
Dear PLS,
What should I do when I start my first period?
Doremi,11
Basically, I think Maddy and Doremi have the same question. What do you do when you get your first period? We've talked a lot about being prepared, having supplies etc., but we haven't talked as much about what to do when you're having your period for the first time. Here are my best Dos and Don'ts.
1. Tell someone. This is often your mom or grandma or the person who takes care of you most of the time. You need supplies and you might have questions, so don't be so shy that you keep this to yourself.
2. Try to relax. Think of how many women have had their first periods. That's like, everyone, including your best friend's older sister, the lady next door, famous celebrities, top athletes, and yes, your mom.
3. Take time to learn. Girls stress about tampons, but first take some time to understand pads. Gee, there are a lot of kinds! Girls often ask how you know which way it goes. Some are shaped where there could be a top and a bottom, but others can go either way. And always with the sticky side down! That's how it sticks to your underwear. Girls also ask what to do with a used pad. Never flush one down the toilet. It will clog the whole deal. Most people roll it up, wrap it in toilet paper, and put it in the trash.
4. Be organized. Take extra pads, even pack an extra pair of pants if that helps you feel prepared. Jot down the date you started your period, so you know to expect it in about a month. Though be prepared that your period could be a little unpredictible the first few times you have it.
5. Don't cry over stained underwear. If your underwear or pants get stained, just take care of it and stay cool. Most stains will come out if you hand wash them right away in the sink with cold water and mild soap. Get them as clean as you can, wring out the water, and then wash them in the washing machine.
6. Don't let your period get in the way. Your period might feel so weird and new that you might think: How can I go to soccer practice? Or even school? But you can and should keep up with your normal routine. Always tell a parent if you don't feel well, but if it's just your period, play on! (Once you have the hang of it, you can try tampons, which make it easier to play sports, even swim.)
Any other advice out there for Maddy and Doremi?

Just be brave, because it always happens to people. Don't be ashamed (:
Here's what u do: carry a pad/tampon in ur purse or backpack just in case. If u need anymore, go to a friend or an adult u trust! Always tell ur mother! Good luck, just remember: always stay prepared!
don't worry about it just makes it worse!
every girl goes through this just sit back and chilllllllll

Ok you need to tell him you're feelings NOW
if you like him, great
if you don't, he'llbe sad but will eventually get over it. Maybe he will even be your friend! Hope I helped!
when u first start your period, u should tell your mom right away so she can get u some pads or tampons.
Don't feel weird every girl gets their period sooner or later
I haven't gotten mine but I want it! Chillax until it comes. And when it comes, be excited! This is what girls look forward to in their life!
Remember that most public rest rooms have tampon despensers. Plus, don't be worried if you stain you underwear, no one sees it anyway.
I worry the same way you do! but don't worry! Being relaxed is SO super important. When you do get your first period, ( which will probably happen sooner than you think) you'll think to yourself, " WHY WAS I SO NERVOUS?!" and when it does happen, just clean yourself up and go on with your day! be prepared cuz it could happen any time! and remember, you can always talk to a parent, grandma, aunt, or cousin, or even better, if your best friend has it, talk to her! NO WORRIES!
Dont worry i freaked out when i first started & was a wreck but then i realized there is nothing to worry about just pack you backup pads and if your having discharge just use pantiliners.
i dont want my you know wwhat
how often do u get discharge? Is is sort of crusty on your underwear?
make sure that you are carrying a pad or tampon with you in case your period, or first period catches you by surprise at school.first things first TELL A GIRL. unless you want to ask a person (a guy) for a pad ( if you don't have one) or first period advice. if there is no one to ask for a pad then fold up a wad of toilet paper and put it in your underpants.
i have not had the "u know what", but i know a great deal of it. when you get it......... don't panik!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
first make shur it is the real thing, cuss i made that mastack alot. and mack shur you tell your mom or a trusted adalt( techer, docter, ect.) thats all i havet to say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when you first start it is a bit strange but you will get used to it no need to get all upset, it happens to everyone. so if you ever feel you need to talk to someone, talk to them it will make you feel a lot better
after you are on your period, make sure you carry a few pads or tampons along with you in-case of emergency's. oh and remember to keep a note of when you started, and write it down every time you are on, then you can go back to see when you first started
Help me! I really want my period! ( which i haven't gotten yet..)
I think that ill get in about a year or so, and was wondering : since i live w/ my mom, how will tell my dad without freaking out first? please help!
schoolgirl
how bout you ask your mom for some supplies (pads, tampons maybe) for you to keep at your dad's house or in your backpack. That way you don't have to have that awkward daughter/father moment!
and you will get your period probably 2 to 2 and a 1/2 years after you started developing breasts.
Here is a tip for being prepared for your period, I carry around a little wallet/bracelet/purse thing, you can get them in any clothes shop, it's full of pads and i carry it around my wrist during classes so when I need 2 use the bathroom I check and make sure if I got it and don't worry where to put the used trash and pads in your school bathroom there should be a little white box just plop it in that box, and if your at home wrap the pad i toilet paper and throw it away, I hope I helped!! :)
how often do u get discharge? Is is sort of crusty on your underwear?
Please answer!
WHATS A DISCHARGE????!!!!!
-Maddy
well ive never had my period either but my big sister said to keep pads and pantyliners ect. with you and dont panic also learn as much as you can off websites, mum, and remember every girl gets a period
For Anonymous who said, "WHATS A DISCHARGE????!!!!!", discharge is a clear/white gooey stuff that comes out of you and into your underwear. It means that your period is not far away. If it is green and has big odor, see a doc.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTION?

u get discharge when ur period isn't far away, when ur discharge starts, u get it every day until ur period. It's not crusty in ur underwear unless it is very, very dried up, otherwise, it's clear or milky white gooey stuff that is very sticky. hope I helped u anonymous!
