For EmmaRose: Some period info

Periods are endlessly confusing because they don't arrive on a set schedule. There's no magic age - some girls are earlier and some are later. EmmaRose has some early signs, but she's kind of tapping her foot, waiting for Aunt Flo to arrive.

Hey, PLS.
I have had discharge for over 8 months. I have heard that you are supposed to have discharge for about 6 months before you get your period. My doctor said I am getting my period in 2 years. I am not sure of whom to believe. (By the way, I have other signs too. I have pubic hair, I'm going through a growth spurt, I have breast "buds", a few pimples, I sweat more, my hips are bigger, I have to shower more often, and I get mood swings. So I basically have all of the signs, right?)
EmmaRose, 10

The average age for a first period is still about 12 for most girls. So it sounds like your doctor is saying you're right on track for that. In addition to discharge, doctors also say that a first period often comes begins about 2 to 2½ years after breast development starts.

It's normal to be a little impatient, but you can't rush nature. Be prepared, ask questions of knowledgeable people (like your doctor and your mom), and hang in there!

Think pink!
Jemma

Thank you so much! I feel so much better. I actually almost threw up when I first learned about getting your period (we watched a video at school), but then I learned more from my mom and doctor. Now I can't wait. Thanks for the help.

I have also heard 2 of my friends saying they were afraid to tell there mom of there period. Dont be afraid of that either! Your mom has been through what you have! She can help you!
I hope this helped someone who is afraid of her period

Don't worry EmmaRose. I know exactly how you feel. I just got my period last month and I'm 13 and a half. Over the past year I got breasts, mood swings, hair, and discharge. My doctor kept telling me it would be any day now. It ended up being about a year later. Now that I got it I wish it would have waited some more. Don't get me wrong, they aren't bad, but it means I'm growing up and I have to deal with thIngs, you know? That was way off topic. Sorry. Just don't worry about getting your period. When it happens it happens.

I only saw in the washroom but it was really no biggy, so girls without their period, trust Marykk and I, it will be scary at first, but you'll get the hang of it!

to Charlotte

depending on what you want and the size of your "buds" you can go for either a lightly padded soft cup bra or even a training bra. it mostly depends on your comfortabilities

February 21, 2012 at 7:34 PM
Anonymous EmmaRose said...

@Charlotte, training bras come in all different sizes. They are like regular clothes (which they are), you have to try on different sizes and see which fits best. I hoped this helped.

I have a question that I think should be answered. Someone else asked this in another topic, and nobody answered it. How often do you get discharge, and is it sort of crusty in your underpants? I might have discharge, but i don't know. I'm 10 years old, and my mom got her's at 11 or 12 (I forget). I already have a bra and shave my legs. (but I am one of the younger girls in my grade.)

February 23, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Anonymous EmmaRose said...

@Anonymous, you probably should tell your mom, but when you feel the most comfortable. I told my mom THE MINUTE I got discharge, becauase that was when I felt comfortable. I knew that I needed the supplies as soon as possible. Hoped this helped.

Dear Emmarose,
Hi I am an anonymous person, but a huge fan of the PLS books! I will say this to you for advice: Puberty is going to come eventually, but not always on time. So, just relax until it comes! Have you read the PLS series? If you have, then you should know that you don't need to worry! If you're worried about it (puberty) coming unexpectidly, then just ask your bestie (bff) to help you out = just like when taylor mayweather helped jemma with hers!!!
Hope this helps,

I was wearing a really big pad already so that it wouldn't leak, but It didn't work. I don't want to wear those giant overnight pads cuz those r WAY too big!!! What do all u other girls wear at night when u r on ur periods. I need do MAJOR tips!!

@Anonymous (Question You Think Should Be Answered), I think I get discharge on a daily basis, but I'm not sure. I haven't gotten my period yet, though, and I think after you have visits from Aunt Flo, you begin to have less discharge. (I'm not entirely sure about that.) Anyways, yes, when it is dried up, it does appear crusty. Considering you already wear a bra, I would say you have discharge.
I hope this helped!

@Carina, just F.Y.I., just because you wear a bra doesn't mean you need one. Some girls wear a bra because they think it's "cool". Just F.Y.I.

#1 dont be soo excited when you first heard about periods and you can't wait to get yours. When you have your period you will feel bloated, you will have cramps and headaches, mood swings would kick in and you will have to use pads.#2 always have extra pads and pants in your book bag incase your period goes through your pants.#3 if you see your mom/dad crying when you get your period that is because she is very emotional about you growing up.#4 when your pad is full of blood wash your private and put a new pad on.DONT BE AFRAID IF YOU SEE BLOOD COMING FROM YOUR PANTS!ITS NATURAL.

To Anonymous above me:

It sounds like your period may be coming soon! It could be probably anywhere between now, to in a year or so, because your breasts usually start developing 2-2 1/2 years before your period. It can be shorter or longer, though!
I think you should probably start carrying around pads in your bag. Ask your mom for some or buy them yourself. If your period catches you be surprise, ask a trusted adult for supplies or fold up some toilet paper into a pad.

Hope I helped!
