Our fastest response yet! Because Katie got her period TODAY

We received this question about 2 hours and 15 minutes ago, but it needs a fast answer so we're squeezing it in tonight.

Dear PLS,
I started my period today and I was to afraid to tell my mom or my teacher. What do I do?
Katie, 13

Our answer will be quick, too. YOU NEED TO TELL YOUR MOM.

Getting a first period is perfectly normal and means your body is growing up, just like it's supposed to. It's OK, if you feel shy about it. It is a personal detail. You don't have to tell the world, but do tell your mom so that she can help you get the supplies you need. You also might have questions that come up and, being that she's a girl, she'll probably have the answers.

If you just can't get the words out, write her a note, or send her a text.

Think pink!
Jemma

Don't be embarrassed about talking with your Mum about this kind of stuff. She has been through all of it before and she will understand, she probably felt the same way as you when she got her first period.
If you really feel uncomfortable telling her what about an older sister? or an aunt or grandma who can tell her for you.
another idea is sending her a text or email which will make it less embarrassing. But make sure if you have any questions, don't feel silly asking they have all been through it before and they will understand what you are going through. :)

Congratz on your period!!!! But as Jemma said, you need to tell your mom. She also went through it so she knows how it felt. Once you tell her she can supply you with thing you need, ( pads, tammpons, etc). Having your period can be a little nerve wrecking but dont worry, your mo can help you!!! -Icygirl;)

Hi, I'm 11 and this is what I said when I got mine because I was absolutely scared out of my mind:
Me: Hey mom, can we go to the pharmacy?
Mom: Oh, sure but why, what's wrong?
Me:... I started.(It was hard to say but stillz)
Mom: OH! You started!? Ok I'll get you some supplies!

Anyways, trust me it was scary, but you have to tell her eventually! And sooner is WAY better than later... if you do... BIG MISTAKE!

I have something for girls who want to know more about tampons:
Okay, don't sue me, but I did some snooping. In the bathroom drawer, there are a box of tampons that belong to my mom. I sneaked a look. The regular sized ones (regular for grown women, that is) are about the width of a ten-year-old's pinky finger. If you put one without an applicator thingie in the middle of your fourth finger and pinky, it is the height of the pinky finger. There IS a string. The jumbo sized ones are ABOUT the width of your thumb. I hope I helped! (now PLEASE, don't tell anyone I snooped!)

This happened TODAY!!! I went to the Girls' Night Out, for all the girls in my town! They talked about periods, nutrients in food, and cyber bulling. I feel REALLY uncomfortable talking about puberty. They gave us "goody bags" afterwards. I thought it would be candy, but no! It was a "first period kit" that had tampons and instructions, a pad, and three pantyliners. It also had coupons for pads. I never knew so many of my friends actually knew about this stuff. We are all fifth graders.

Hey, I have some advice on which pads to use. Kotex Tween U shape is the way to go even though you are a teenager I think they will fit I have seen them and they are just barely smaller than adult sized. Kotex shows great respect to kids getting periods because when I went shopping for emergency pads and Kotex was the only brand that carried tween sizes. Hoped that my advice helps you through this time or the following ones.

Dear Jemma,

I am a mother and believe that you are doing a brilliant job. However, perhaps you should tell the girls, frequently, that a mother is the best source of advice. It saddens me to see so many young women who don't feel able to talk to their parents...so many are turning to the Internet more.

My daughter used to talk to me everyday, but started using this website. Consequently, she no longer tells me anything. She does not ask me for advice, she does not want me to know her personal things. I don't even know whether she has had her period or not!

Please reinforce the saying "mother knows best", as it is true. Girls, your mother had to go through this too- but it was a lot easier. Why? Because we talked to OUR mums.
Turn to your mum first, Internet second.

Keep up the good advice.

Regards,

Elizabeth Mary Stuart

Ask yourself y am I embarassed to tell my mom or whoever. That person u tell must be close to u and that person should care about u and ur feelings. My face was turning red! But My mom was like, oh, Ok. Where do you want to get a suit then? We ended up getting an AWESOME swim suit at Justice.

Does anyone know where to get a good plus size tankini swimsuit? I want one that has the top that goes all the way down my stomach, not like a bra halfway. I tryed looking at junior sized ones at JCPennies but it looked funny because they had cups for your boobs and I need one that doesn't have cups at the top. So do you now where I could get a junior sized one without those or a plus sized one that goes all the way down your stomach like a tonk top (like th name, tankini)? Thanks!

When I got my period I did a little 'searching' in my mom's bathroom and found where she kept her pads and tampons. I wrote her a note that said:
CAN I BUY SOME PADS AT THE STORE?
She read the note and helped me buy my first box of pads.
You should TOTALLY talk to your mom.
If you aren't comfortable with talking with a teacher, then see if a close friend has a pad you can borrow, err keep!!
You can also say that you don't feel good and go to the nurse and tell her/him you need a pad.
Hope this helps!!

Hey Katie,

First of all, Big Congrats as you r a woman now. Also your mum is no enemy, she is the only source from where you can get all the info u want and maybe that she is waiting for the day when you will say " MUM, I got my periods". If you are not comfortable., make a beautiful card and write a message down there. This is a good way as it will be easy for you and that card will be really special for your Mom. I am not at all scared of my mum coz she is more than a mum to me, she is my best friend. And I suppose your mom is your best friend too! So why hide things from your best friend, your mum!

Hope I have delivered my words well and I hope that I dint make you sad. If I did then a big sorry... Congrats Again

Did I get mine because I woke to a brown stain on my bed? Is it my period?

I just finished my first period. I haven't told my mom... But will she be like "why didn't you tell me!"

To Anonymous:

Tell your mom! Eventually, she will ask, and if it's been like three months, she will probably be kind of upset you didn't tell her. Explain that you were really nervous, so that's why you didn't tell her at first. Leave her a note, email, or text if you want.

Hope I helped!

Did you get more than one stain? Then probably, yes! Periods can be brown, light red, dark red... Lots of different colors.

Hope I helped!

Hey, I liked this boy for about half a year (im 13) i didn't know how to tell him so I left it, he acted as if he liked me as well so I decided to give it a shot and ask him how he felt about me. We were in art and my so called best friend , I stepped back and they have been going out for about 3 weeks, I still like him though but I don't want to get in the way of his and her relationship, what do I do? I really need help to either get over him and let them get on with their relationship or I need a way to tell my friend that i like him without her hating me but she knew I liked him, please help me

Kiera ive been having the same problem!! Im just stepping back and waiting to see how their relationship turns out. It will be ok you have a long life ahead of you, and you can wait until you get a chance without hurting anyone. Just remember if she knew you liked him and still dated him she is not your best friend!!! Keep your head up!
