What to do about hair "down there"

OK, we're getting this question a lot so it's time for an answer.

What should you do about hair "down there?"

First off, it's NORMAL to start growing pubic hair when you're in puberty. If you have a few sparse hairs, you're probably early in the process of puberty. If you have more hairs than you can count, you're farther along in your journey toward looking like a grown up woman.

Secondly, you DO NOT have to do anything about the hair. There seems to be a trend toward removing pubic hair. And it may be one of those things where everyone assumes that everyone else removes theirs and no one wants to be different. But it isn't necessary or required. You don't have to and you shouldn't feel pressure to.

Thirdly, there are some good reasons to leave that part of your body alone. Learning to shave is tricky enough on underarms and legs. Shaving your private parts is trickier still. You could cut yourself - OUCH! Some girls have written in asking about hair removal creams. But I looked at one of the most popular products and it said not to use the cream on that particular area.

Fourthly, your body naturally grows pubic hair. So it may be QUITE A BOTHER to keep on removing something that your body is going to be growing for years to come. Yes, lots of women decide to shave their underarms and legs, but do you really need another hassle?

With summer getting closer, some of the concerns I'm hearing have to do with how girls look in bathing suits. Though it's possible for pubic hair to also creep into the inner thigh area, it's not very common in younger girls. If that is a problem for you, talk to your mom about how to safely remove the hair from your inner thighs for bathing suit season.

What do you think Pink Locker girls? Any thoughts on this, ahem, private topic?

Think pink!
Jemma

I have a bunch of hairs 'down there' but I ignore them. Even tough sometimes they drive me crazy! So far, I think that people who arent growing hairs that go your thighs should NOT try to hassle with them. Its just easier and would avoid an awkward conversation!

Help!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been developing in my chest area for a few months now. I'm pretty large up there. My mom and I are not close at all, so I have been kinda hiding that from her. So im sure that I will need a padded bathing suit or something. And I just don't want her to know I'm going through puberty but she will notice when I wear a bathing suit this summer. What do I do?

I don't believe in too short or too tall for your age. Everyone grows at their own pace and grows as tall as their body wants to. One of my friends is about that short (or shorter) and I'm 5'3. Everyone's different, but I say you're fine.

I have like tons of hair down there and I really wanna wear a bikini but, I'm afraid a few hairs from my inner thighs might stick out which would be embarrassing but, my mom says that I shouldn't remove the hair down there. I really want to cause it feels uncomfortable and itchy at times.

@Anonymous

I think you should find a bikini that has shorts as bottoms, instead of the regular bikini bottoms. I tried that once, and not only did it help hide the hairs, but I got one guys attention by being different. Not having a normal bikini made me not seem like a girly girl, and he liked that. :D

I'm 16 - I feel a little old to be on this website since I know most of this stuff but I was curious about what y'all said about the hair 'down there.' A lot of girls my age say its disgusting if you don't shave down there. I disagree.. It is awkward to have it but its normal right? If its sticking out of your bathing suit and you don't have the hair on your inner thighs, maybe try trimming it down there CAREFULLY with scissors? I'unno but that's what I do when it bothers me. But other than that I wouldn't worry about it since its normal. :)

That is why do research and so lucky to find kidshealth.org & pls.I barely get anything out my sister and cousins.exspecily if im suppose to be going to middle school next year. What if might need pads but if i even say talk about puberty other than emotions she says im to young.
Do i need to just talk to my sister and then mom?and do you think my period could be coming soon enough that i should carry a pad just in case for me or others?

It's okay to have hair 'there'. It's all part of puberty! Some people get it early, others a little later. So don't worry, everyone gets it. BTW, I think wearing bathing suits are just fine. I don't think it'll show any hairs. Good luck! :)

Waxing hurts! Shaving grows back super quick and prickly! Not enough bleach cream to bleach legs! I am in such a dilemma!!! But don't worry, it is winter and I'm wearing long pants (I hope no indoor swimming trips!) To people who can't decide weather to shave or wax, pick shave. I always wax my legs, looks nice but hurts a lot and doesn't stay for long! Also you have more chance of getting ingrown hairs and they hurt a lot!!!

ok.. so im an early bloomer and i gained my dad's super hairy gene AND my hair grows super fast and thick. so i grow pubic hair on my inner thighs and also on the sides. i can't even wear a bathing suit or a pair of shorts without it sticking out. i will sometimes use a depilatory cream, which will sort of work, but when it grows back stubbly that night it will not. shaving leaves a stubble an hour after and irritates me. waxing hurts horribly, is very expensive, is uncomfortable because there is still a period of time between waxes where you are hairy, and waxing only last for 2 weeks for me :(. (ps all of those opinions on hair removal were from experience) I am a dancer and i end up having to wear super long shorts when i dance or else my pubic hair will stick through/show through my tights. the answer from most would be "just keep wearing the long shorts". yea i wish. i'm going to a 3 week ballet intensive and no shorts are allowed in class. what can i do? i cannot have stubble through my tights. it is so embarrassing. even after camp, i need some sort of solution. do you think i should consider laser hair removal? i know there are at home kits, but i hear it is painful. please..someone..anyone help me:(
