Magazine cover girls: Can you believe what you see?

You probably know that magazines take photos of already lovely-looking girls and women and then use a computer to "fix" any flaws. So a beautiful girl goes from being great to being, possibly, unreal. She might be impossibly thin or have impossibly perfect skin, no bruises on her shin or pimples on her chin. Not like "normal" girls.

But knowing this just isn't enough because when you keep on seeing the images of impossibly perfect girls/women, it sends a message. And the message is: BE PERFECT, OR ELSE!

So girls spend too much time fretting and worrying and examining themselves and comparing themselves. That's time we could be spending doing lots of other things, such as, planning to take over the world, or learning French, or watching tonight's sunset with a friend.

Sooooo... that brings us to Julia Bluhm, an 8th grader from Maine, who started a petition asking Seventeen magazine to put real girls in their magazine. Just one spread a month, she suggested. Forty-six thousand people signed her petition!

Wow, we like the way she thinks. Read more about Julia HERE.

See her online petition HERE.

If you want to add your support, ask a parent if it's OK to sign it. (The form asks for your name and address and you should ask a parent first before giving that out.)

Better yet, ask your mom or dad to sign it, too!

Think pink!

Hey!! We watched this video in class the other day when we were learning about self confidence. Hopefully you can copy it into your browser and watch it. If not it is called Dove Evolution Commercial. This shows exactly what models do before they are ready to be in a commercial or even on a billboard!! Enjoy!

I saw this vidio once where it showed how editers change what girls look like for magazines. They even edit the photo so that the shoulder blades don't show!

You should be really proud Julia! I know that they're fake but I can't help but still have insecurities. But what about the girls who don't know they're fake! How would they feel. This is a great idea. <3 Emma

They some times photoshop celebs to make them look "flawless" but they all have their own imperfections, so yeah just rock on and listen to her

JULIA ROCKS AND IS SO TRUE!!!!!!! Some girls are insecure because of what they see in magazines and go to extremes to try to be perfect. But the truth is, no ones perfect. If everyone was perfect they could all be on a magazine cover and get rich just because they're pretty. But in reality, even the people who are 99% plastic and have has facelifts everywhere arent perfect. Flaws are cute. I like the way my body is even if people call me daddy long legs. Its just the way we were made to be.

ladyadorable101: i agree totally. people in magazines are like to perfect to be real it seems. they have like three pounds of make up on and a trillion pounds of hairspray. anyone who looks like that is like way too obsessed with themselves!
