Bon voyage, Olivia!

Olivia is going on a plane trip - from London to Paris. And she's worried about being bored.

Dear PLS,
I know this isn't about girl stuff but I'm going on a 20 hour trip on plane to Paris and London and I have no idea what I can do on the plane. any ideas on what i can do???
Olivia, 10

First off, I hope you have a fabulous time in France! Traveling does something wonderful to your brain. Seeing new people, new places, smelling new smells (croissants?), and eating new food - it often leads to new thoughts and ideas. What could be better?

As for the plane ride. I like to come prepared with a variety of things to do. Here's my list:

Reading: (I like to bring a novel, a tour guide for where I'm going, and magazines if my attention span feels short. If you've got a Kindle or an iPad you can bring all these without having to carry a heavy bag.)

Drawing: I like to doodle in different colored pens or play Hangman if anyone around me is willing.

Music: Create a play list for your trip. Maybe it's chill, calming music for relaxing or rev it up music because you plan to have a wild time in Paris.

Movies: Download your own ahead of time. I like one movie that I've seen a billion times because it makes me feel at home. And then I like a great movie I've been wanting to see but haven't yet. If you still have time, why not text your friends a movie review?

Daydreaming: Something about the clouds out my window - or the world rushing by during a car trip - just makes me feel dreamy. I just let my mind relax and try to think about nothing. This hardly ever works and I start thinking about this and that, but I try to limit myself to happy subjects.

What else, Pink Locker girls? What are your favorite boredom busters for long trips?

Think pink!
Jemma

First of all. Have fun in France! And now to my point a bunch of months ago I went to Africa for a month. It was soo fun but the plane ride was about 16 hours. Take a backpack full of things you can do because your going to get bored. Ps at all cost DO NOT forget gum. Most painful experience ever!

I always make sure to bring lots of books and my iPod. If you have an iPod download lots of new games that you don't play until you get on the plane. It will give you something fun to do while your stuck on the plane. And, bring some snacks! Airports aren't too picky about snacks (make sure to ask your parents first) but pack a big bag full of candy and munchies. That will help pass the time. And, because your flight is so long you could just take a nap. Napping always passes the time quickly when there's nothing else to do! Or, you could just think of ways to reorganize your room or what your dream pet would be. There's lots of things to do, but make sure you don't get too worried about the plane ride and have FUN FUN FUN on your trip!!! :-)

On long trips, I just try to rest and maybe even sleep as long as I can. I just close my eyes for a while and imagine what it will be like at the destination. You can color, write, read, if you have any siblings you can talk to them, madlibs, music players, and many more things.

Sounds fun! I wish I could go on a trip like that! What I like to do on long plan rides is read my daily devotional book or have devotions and prayer time with my sister and mom. I also read stories in my Bible!

Take a iPod or mp3 player to listen to music or read a book or magazine. And if you don't have a music player and reading while you move makes you sick bring a portable puzzle or something to draw on. Hope this helped

Bring a variety of things to do. If you just bring a gaming console or rely on the built in television, you'll probably get bored. Bring paper to draw or write or a diary to write about something like 50 things you want to to before you die or the sketch of your dream wedding dress. Bring a pack of cards, a book, some mags, some compact games that you can play by yourself and if you have a sibling or someone to play with, some games you can play with others. You can also play truth or dare, I spy, hangman and other games like that. Download lots of new apps or bring lots of games if you have an electronic device you want to bring. Good luck! <3 Emma

1: HAVE FUN!!!
2: Planes are boring, well most of the time... When I was younger, I went to Los Angeles from Melbourne, Australia. It took 20-24 hours I think but it was sleight because I had: a good book
Colour pencils and a notepad
My imagination and...

I SLEAPT MOST OF THE TIME!!!

Sleep is the answer because it takes up most of your plane flight and I didn't get jet lagged cos I was asleep when we went over the international date line!!!

Good Luck!

In all honesty, I go on international trips a lot. I love seeing the movies that play. You'll have a seet and it has a movie screen in front of you. It doesn't cost money anymore, it's free with the trip. Just watch a movie you've wanted to see and relax. I find the movies help my fear of being in the air

Good luck on the plane! :)

I would suggest bringin a handeld video game system. A.L.A.- a Nintendo DS, DS Lite, Dsi, DSI XL, or 3DS. Or if you have a Gameboy which it quite extinct nowadays. Maybe you have an ipod touch or ipod to listen to music. Text your friends and ask what they're doing. Or my favorite, if you are taking a very early or extremely late at night flight, good ol' fashioned SLEEP!!! What I do is take completely random pics of the view outside or the people around me. Sometimes its my mom dozing off(i no its wierd) theirs billions of things to do! Ok a couple things to do. I hope that helps:)

@ warrior fireheart: OMG I love your name! I love the Warrior books!! I have all of them!

@ Olivia: Have fun on your trip first of all.
I travel a lot as well. I recently went on a trip around Europe too and it was a 24 hour flight!
Here is what I do:
- Watch TV shows and Movies (There are always TVs on planes! Unless its an old plane. I stayed up almost all night watching tv!)
- Play games (The TVs have games on them)
- Eat! (You will probably have all 3 meals on the plane and that will take up some time)
- Listen to music
- Read a book
- (Make sure you pack these things in your on board luggage! But don't use electronics when the plane is taking off and landing!)
- Talk to the people around you (I'm always sitting next to my family so have a chat with them if you feel like)
- Look outside the window (I love looking at the clouds and when its night time and you can see lights when you land)
- (They sometimes give you little bags full on fun stuff to do)
- Sleep (try to stay up though!)

I love long flights so I never get bored, just remember to get up and stretch your legs every so often like walk to the bathroom or something.

Hope I helped!
My Dad is a plane engineer and we travel a lot so I have a lot of experience. One time our plane was struck by lightning! We were fine though, planes are built to be protected against stuff like that. :)

- I LOVE FLYING!

Hey there Olivia,
Like everyone said, have fun in France! Bring a camera and take some pictures! For the flight, I know it might be boring, but bring a journal or something that you can write in about your trip. Bring earplugs and gum for when the plane takes off. During the flight, you can doodle, read, write, listen to music, stare out the window, chat with someone, have a snack but most people sleep on long flights like that. Sleep is good for killing lots of time and you'll probably have jet lag, so check what time it'll be in Paris. If it's normally later in the evening or in the afternoon, then you should sleep then because it'll be like taking an afternoon nap or sleeping for the night. Bring a travel pillow and maybe a stuffed animal. What I like to do is wear fuzzy socks because they feel so comfortable! I hope you have a good time!

July 12, 2012 at 11:43 AM

I agree with Jetgirl about the travel journal, those are fun.
You could also bring an electronic device (such as a nintendo or ipad or kindle fire) and play with that or make up a game. My fam likes to play 20 questions on long trips.

I just got back from my flight to Seattle, and i got some really cool tips for you:

Sleep- It will take up lots of time, and I find the airplane really relaxing.:)

Video Games- Charge your video game systems the night before, and bring it on the plane, so you fight evil video game things on the go :)

Internet- Bring your computer so you can watch funny cat videos, Read online sories(I like the blackblood alliance) or chat with friends while in the air, but the wi-fi might not be free :)

Books-Bring your favorite book or books (i like warrior cats and guardins of ga'hoole) and read them. :)

hope this helps
love, Warrior Fireheart

I like to watch TV until I fall asleep but some planes don't have a tv! (that sucks) and so you must come prepared.
Here's what I do:
-I brought my netbook and made a little video presentation (no internet on planes) with my built in webcam
-Bring an iPod and listen to music (ONE DIRECTION!!!) Until you fall asleep.
-I like watching the plane take off and land, which takes time
-Bring magnetic game boards to play with
-never forget a pen and a notebook!
-draw
-think of some topics to answer- what kind of emoticons can you make with the computer keys?
-write a story!
-read the catalogs they provide
-fold origami. make up your own origami
-try finger knitting (if you have yarn)
-read a book
-try to see how many words can you make out of tomatoes
-daydream about your crush--make imaginary conversations

@ Olivia
Crossword books or sudoku books or other game books are good to waste some time (I'm terrible at sudoku!)

Or you could buy a french book and start learning some of the language!

Ive never been on a trip that long but i do fly alot so what i usually do is: 1. LOOK OUT THE WINDOW when taking of until youre above the clouds 2.IMAGINE what the clouds are shaped like (a witch, a heart etc.), or simply daydream 3.READ the onboard magazine, the menu, a magazine, a book (like the last book that just came out in a good series)etc. 4. DO A PUZZLE like a sudoku, or a crossword, or a spot the difference 5.DRAW your future house, pet, wedding dress, wardobe, room design etc. 6.SLEEP self-explanitory 7.DRINK WATER its really easy to get dehydrated 8.DO EXERCISE in your seat twist your ankles, bend your knees etc. 9.WALK around the plane, to the bathroom, whatever but 20 hours sitting still is definately not good for you 10.PLAY a magnetic board game, hangman, or on a nintendo 11. RACE your brother, like who spots a person on the ground first when your landing etc.

WOW! your lucky i will go to london (i live in saudi araibia).
but anyways i would like to read a book and if you have an ipad or iphone touch i try to download games that don't need wifi.
like: temple run and flow.
flow is a really cool game and its like chess it makes your brain work so i think its better 'cause it will take time to figure out the level so your time will fly by.
and i also recomend downloading an app called media burner.
its like when you go to youtube and you put a video on your favorites but when you want to see that video you have to use wifi but media burner allowes you to save a video on your video list and you can check it out and you won't need wifi.
and last but not least i recomend watching a movie on the plane or downloading a movie. hope this helped.

To Jessica, You seem to be a fan of all popular books. You might enjoy the inheritance trilogy/cycle(Eragon) (they are really long but some say rip-offs of lord of the rings I have only read the hobbit so I wouldn't know) skulduggery pleasant (not as long but still good) or anything by Rick riordan (Percy Jackson/ Kane chronicles/heroes of Olympus) the spook's books(it has another name in the us so ask for the author "Joseph delaney") are also good but they keep getting shorter also the book thief is supposed to be good but sad I haven't actually read it yet though so I don't know.

and so on.

My plane checklist:
ALWAYS BRING SNACKS!!! If you get the munchies, you might not want to eat the airplane food because it made me sick, so always prepare a bag of your OWN favorite snacks.
A book can relax you on a plane ride, so make sure to bring a book that you like.
That's all my advice!
Hope this helped!
