Pool party + her period = HELPME!!!!!

Pool parties are splashy fun, especially when it's hot-hot-hot out. But HELPME!!!! has a little problem. Can you offer some advice?

hey girls,i know this is kinda off topic but its kinda of an EMERGENCY,that needs to be answered or helped in anyway ASAP! So tomorrow is my friends's pool party, and i have been looking forward to going to it since the beginning of summer. and guess what happened this morning... my PERIOD came!! it surprised me since i have been getting my period at the END of the month NOT begining -_-" and my so called PERIOD messed up my camping trip earlier this summer and so i was so sure that this time my period wont come this month that early. anyways i REALLY want to go to the pool party. But here is the problem 1) i have NEVER used tampons 2) my mom said that since i'm on my period, i shouldnt go 3) she probably wont let me use tampons EVER... so i srsly dont know what to do.. any advice?

When your period is a new thing, it's like OMG, here it comes again. But after you've had it a while, it's more like ho, hum, here it comes again. I can tell HELPME!!!!! is in the OMG stage. That's totally normal. It takes some time to get adjusted to this monthly occurrence.

I think, sooner or later, all girls have to get used to using tampons. Pads just won't work for swimming and you don't want your life interrupted by your period. I think HELPME!!!!! should ask her mom in a respectful way to start using tampons - at least for swimming situations. I think most moms would understand that you don't want to sit home being bored just because you're having your period.

How about you, Pink Locker girls? Has this ever happened to you? What's your advice for HELPME!!!!!

Think pink,

I hate having my period in the summer! I got it last december. I'm not on it right now and I've already gotten it for this month, but it can be un-predictable because its still kinda new and not always on time. I WANT TO GO SWIMMING WITHOUT WORRYING! Anyways, enough about me. To HELP ME!!!!!! Your mom shouldn't decide for you what you do with YOUR body. Ask her maturely if you can please use a tampon only for swimming. If she says yes, WHOO HOO! Go buy smallish tampons. Well, depending on your flow. I've never used a tampon before but I tried and it didn't hurt but it didn't go in fully because it was too big so it became uncomfortable only because it was too big so I would suggest getting smaller ones because they will probably be more comfortable. If she says no, BOOOO that sucks but don't worry about it. GOOD LUCK :)

There are guides on tampon company's websites like the Tampax website has videos and youtube has videos of how to use a tampon. I'm sure you'll be ok. If u tell your friend beforehand everything and tell her not to tell you can still enjoy the pool party.

Talk to your mother about it. She'll understand the problem, especialy if you've been looking forward to this. Be respectful and understanding, even if she stays adamant. Also, a few tears may help in pursuing your case. But above all, if she doesn't allow you, don't get angry!!!! She'll be impressed by your maturity and is likely to think twice next time you have this request. Also, if you still wanna go to the party, just lounge and sunbathe! (But remember the sunscreen!) Aunt Flo is no fun, but once she becomes regular, you may not have to miss another pool party again!!!!!

You could just sit around on the edge of the pool with your feet in the water. Explain to your friends why you can't and they'll understand, if you don't want to tell them yet i'm sure you could say you feel a bit sick, or you have an ear infection.

you should ask your friend if she can change the date . if not ask your mom about the tampon again. if she does not allow you i am sure your friend will understand if you dont go to the party for this reason or you can go put ur legs in the water but not ur full body. i wanted to go swimming this week with friends but i got my period and i went anyway and sat there and talked to them. goodluck<3

To me. I'm 15, and still haven't gotten my period. My mum got her's at 14, and my friends all have there's. Is this nothing to worry about, or should I consult a physician?
BTW, your blog is sooo helpful.

Don't worry my older sister and my mum got theirs at around 15 and a half. But I was different and I got mine 2 days ago! And I just turned 14!
Do you have any of the signs? If you are worried talk to your Mum about it but people can get theirs as late as 16. Everybody is different. If you don't have your period by 16 and show no signs of getting it soon you should then talk to your doctor. But don't panic, it might be very soon!
I was panicing but then I realised everybody was different and I'll get my period when my body is ready and then *BOOM!* out of nowhere I got my period two days ago!
I hope this helped!

Also hot water bottles are the best or a warm bath or shower. And I find that going for a run or exercising helps with period cramps or when I am stressed. :)

Have you asked about using tampons yet? In my opinion you should be able to start using tampons when you know you are ready. My Mum said I can start using them on my next period or whenever I feel ready, but I'm a bit scared of using them so I don't think I am ready just yet. I know they are really helpful and they will make my dancing and soccer training easier when I am on my period but I'm just scared of using them.

Well, you could always wear a pad under some shorts with a swim top on. Then while everyone is in the pool you could float around on a floatie. Tell a friend what's. Going on so you are not dealing with it by yourself. She might help too.

frangipani, If the blood sits for a while it turns brown. So it IS you period. And when I got my first period, (about 6 months ago,) I only had it for 2 days. Oh, and btw, here is the Story of my first period:So my family was on a plane to go to Arizona in Spring Break. While we were in the Airplane, I was really hot and stuff for no reason. I had some cramps too. In the Airport then, when I went to the bathroom, I had like, tons of blood in my undies. (I was thinking, oh, that's why I smelt so bad in the airplane. Poor dad.)I was really scared, even though I knew it was my period. I told my mom, and she gave me a pad. At least it only lasted 2 days, so I could still swim. Oh, and guys, my mom has been like, setting tampons on my desk so I could use them. The problem is, I am not just scared to try it, I think I will either puke, or faint if I try!!!! Any advice? (BTW I have fainted 3 times because of blood and stuff...... so yeah.)

What about a braid? Or maybe if you're feeling adventurous a french braid or a fishtail braid (search up either 'French braid' or 'fishtail braid' in YouTube and there should be many videos showing you how to do them if you don't already know.) you could do it on the side or add a ribbon to the end if you want. Look up CuteGirlsHairstyles in YouTube. Some of them would probably work. Good luck. Sophie Rebecca.

Too late 4 the party now but 4 everyone else who has the same situation. Sometimes when you haven't had your period that long you just arent ready to use tampons yet. You don't feel ready to do that, you're only just getting used to pads. That happened when I had a party. What I did was still go but I wore my swimsuit under bord shorts and wore a pad. No one could tell. I said I brought my bathers just in case but I couldn't swim cause I had an earache. (You can't swim with an earache) I didn't like missing out on the swimming but at least I still got half a party!

If you have started to get discharge then it usually means that you should get your period in six months to a year, however I have had discharge for like five years and haven't gotten my period yet, so you never know. I also have a question. I have heard that you are also supposed to get your period no more than 2 1/2 years after you start to develop breasts, but it has been over 2 1/2 years for me and I haven't gotten my period. Do you think I should be worried? If so does anyone know what I should do?

To Julliet-
Discharge is a liquid that comes out of your vagina without you controlling it. It can be clear, white, or off-white in color; and thin, heavy, sticky, or elastic in texture. It usually is nothing to worry about, but can sometimes indicate an infection. It signals that you will be getting your period soon. Hope I helped!

to Katelyn:
you shouldnt worry about using a tampon. i've seen videos on youtube about how to use a tampon, if you dont know how to do it. dont worry, its not to difficult and it shouldnt hurt. if it does hurt, than the tampon's not all the way in, so you should pull it out and try again with another.

to C:
no, it does not mean you will have your period soon. it definatly is one of the signs that your period is coming, but i have been having discharge for months, and there is no sign of my period yet.

to Anonymous:
no, you shouldnt be worried. that is just on average. you will have your period when your body is ready.

to juliett:
discharge is clear or white or yellow stuff that sometimes comes out of your vagina. it is basicly your body's way of getting rid of any bad stuff inside of your body. not everyone gets discharge, so dont be worried if you dont get it.

@Anonymous, just say something like, "Mom, when did you get your first period?" Then she'll tell you and maybe say a little funny story and then you have to ask, "What will it be like when I get my period? Will it hurt?" And keep bringing up questions. Don't be afraid to make a little joke about it to lighten up the mood. Your mom probably is having trouble talking to you about it too.

Just ask her. Personally, I prefer pads, and that's coming from someone who's had theirs for a while. But if you REALLY, REALLY, WITHOUT-A-DOUBT want to wear tampons, just ask. She'll understand. :)

I have had discharge in my underwear for probably about 3 years, and I'm just wating for my period to come. I'm an early grower, I grew faster than most of my friends and I'm more mature than some of my friends. I'm just watting because it seams like forever since I started getting discharge. Plus almost all my friends are flat chested and wear real bras, when they don't need them and I actually do. It is really strange for me.
Please help!!!!!

Tell your mom it might come and ask if you can buy some panty liners. If you want you can grab a jacked so you could tie and hide your pants (mine didn't go through to my pants though) I also had discharge for awhile too. My big thing is just be prepared. I got it the day or two before i had to go swim and camping (mine started this 24) I had 2 panty liners with me that really helped.

Maybe or maybe not. It depends! Girls (and boys) don't always take after their parents. And if you don't grow any more, it's okay! Lots of people feel too short or too tall.

Hey. I had the same problem too. I was 12 when I had my first period (still 12 today.). I went to summer camp on Monday getting ready for swimming. Before I left, I went to use the bathroom when all of a sudden I see a red spot on my swimwear. That was my very first period. I instantly told my mom that it came and she prepared me. I really thought I was still gonna swim but she told me I can't cuz I would need a tampon. And I was too early to start using one. It was a suckish moment for me but I soon shook it off. Here I am laying in my bed unable to go to sleep telling you my story while i'm waiting on my 2nd period. Well ok good night. :) Stay strong and proof the boys are drooling while girls are ruling. ;)

To Anonymous on October 1st:

Well, you usually get your period 2-2 1/2 years after your breast start developing/puberty starts. Also, you might get a sticky white/yellowish discharge in your underwear 6 months to a year before your period.

Hope I helped!

1'm 14 and my mom just recently started letting me wear tampons when I was 13(and that was onlt when my aunt spoke up adn said something because we had planned to go swimming and she told my mom we didn't want me to miss out on anything.) so if your mom isn't letting you use tampons and it's blocking you from you plans talk to a woman in your family who you trust and feel comftorabel talking to about this.

Ok so I am having a pool party next Wednesday and it has been 33 days since my first/recent peroid. I am only 12 and no one else has there's so I don't want to tell anybody. I really don't want to be caught off guard at the party cuz there will be boys there too and that would be so embarrassing! I don't know if I am ready for a tampon cus I am only 12 I could wear one if I really needed to but does anyone else have any ideas?!

It's almost my birthday and I'm hosting a pool party, and guess what. I'm on my period. I'm a swimmer also but I've never wanted to use a tampon, I have trouble getting it in, and it's just uncomfortable. So whenever I get my period and I plan on swimming I usually wear my swimsuit bottoms, a pad and a pair of swim shorts. I know, I know, the pad does get soggy but it prevents the blood from leaking out along with the shorts and swimsuit bottoms for extra protection. I hope this helps!
PS: period blood DOES NOT mix with water. So don't worry about turning the water into Kool Aid :)

I'm twelve also- turning thirteen next week. Anyway, I'm not a fan of tampons. They're just weird and uncomfortable to me. So my solution to swimming on your period is wearing a pad, swimsuit bottoms, and shorts on top. And I know, I know, the pad will get soggy but it prevents leakage along with the swimsuit bottoms and shorts for extra protection. I hope this helps
