How do you know if you're good at something?

This question caught our eye: Anonymous likes writing stories, but she doesn't know if she's good at it or not. Here's what she said.

I love to write books... but how do I know if I am any good or not? I am super shy and I don't like to share my stories with people. My mom has tried to read some but I am not sure if she liked them or not. My sister says they are too boring but she is only six. My brother is very encouraging and would like to read them but I just don't know. Please help.

Hurray for Anonymous for writing her own stories! Here's the thing about writing or any kind of art. Everyone has his/her own taste and not everyone likes the same things. But I'd encourage Anonymous the Author to keep on writing and not worry much about what people think of her writing.

Writing, like any skill, is something a person can work on for years and years. Writers get better word by word, sentence by sentence, and story by story. So keep on writing Anonymous!

And here a a few ideas if Anonymous wants to get input and feedback on her writing:

1)Start a writer's group or a creative group for friends who like to write, draw, act, sing etc. Get together and talk about your art. Anonymous could share her stories with this small group of fellow artists.
2)Find out if your school has a literary magazine or a school newspaper that might accept and publish your stories.
3)Talk to your English teacher. Is he or she a cool person? If so, tell your teacher you're working on your writing. Maybe he or she can take a look, give you some pointers, or suggest great books to read!

Do you have any other advice for Anonymous the Author? How do YOU know that you're good at something?

Think pink!

I love to write books too! And guess what? If you love doing something that much, chances are, you're good at it. People don't generally love to do things they're bad at. Suggestion: NaNoWriMo! It stands for National Novel Writing Month in November. It challenges you to set a goal for the number of words and you try to meet it! I did it last November and it definitely helped my writing skills. Google it, and I'm sure you'll love it. It's for all ages, too! Good luck and I'm glad you're writing!

I really love writing fiction stories. I also found out I'm not too bad at writing them either. I had always thought I was really bad at untill we had to write our stories and share with the class. I once wanted to know if a writing piece I wrote recently was good so I showed some of it to my friend and she said it was boring but she doesnt know I wrote it. But honestly if you truly like to write at some point you'll get the courage and show your writing. All it takes is a little courage.

I know your good at writing, I may not know you, but you are! I like writing as well, mainly warrior cats fanfics, i can even give you a small part of it:
Whitefire leapt at the black tom."Traitor!" she yowled. Icetalon watched in horror as the white she-cat sank her teeth into her friend,Liontooth. He wasn't a traitor, he just had to speak to the leader of StormClan. His black fur soon became covered in scars.
"No, he can't die!" Icetalon thought. Whitefire left the cave. Icetalon ran over to her friend.
''I-Icetalon." Liontooth managed to say her name.
"No, don't die!" Icetalon mewed, tears streaming down her face.
"She's a murderer, you can't let me die for nothing, tell InfernoClan about this. Goodbye" Liontooth mewed.
"NO!" Icetalon mewed as Liontooth's body went limp and he didn't say another word. Icetalon's eyes became wet with tears as she bowed her head for the fallen warrior.
Don't even pay attention to anything bad others say about your writing, just ignore it, if you think you are a good writer, than you are! And because your brother wants to read it, let him, your a really good writer!
love, Warrior Fireheart

Change your pad often, so there is no leakage.

Ok I know this is off topic but I would really like this answered :). I have really short hair and I always wear my hair in a short little ponytail. I've lost self confidence in my hair and it doesnt move at all. I really want hair extensions but my mom didnt let me last time I asked and that was in fifth grade. Now that Im going to sixth grade Im ready to ask again. Last time my mom said no because I wasnt in middle school yet. I really wonder if she'll finally let me get them. This would really make me feel more self confident in my hair. My sister has hair extensions and shes in middle school. Please give me advice on how to ask my mom for hair extensions without sounding like Im complaining and whining. Thankyou so much!

August 11, 2012 at 12:15 AM
Anonymous Kelsey ;) said...

@ Chocolatepandas

Just go up to your mom and say "Hey mom, remember when I asked if I could have extensions? But you said I couldn't have them because I wasn't in middle school? Well, I'm going to be in middle school this year, and I wanted to ask again"
If she says yes:
Thank her
If she asks why you want them:
Simply tell her "Because I don't like the way my hair is, and it makes me lose confidence, if I have extensions, then I might have more confidence.
If you really have to go that far:
Say "Plus [Insert sisters name here] has them"
If she says no:
Ask for an explanation, and respect it, eventually she will let you have them.

Hope I helped!

I have a problem though. I'm going into grade seven next year, and I love joining the sports teams. The thing is, last year we had new jerseys made specifically for the tournaments at school. My problem is that they don't fit me! (I'm overweight) They are always super tight and it's really embarrassing! Please don't tell me to "Just lose weight" because trust me I have been in this same spot for a long time and I have tried! Also I'm really tall so I just look like some giant, Plus they are really short on me! I'm overweight, but I'm also really curvy which makes me un comfortable when I have to wear tight fitting jerseys! What do I do?!?! I don't want to give up sports just because I'm uncomfortable in a skin-tight top!! Please help!

Wear something taht makes you feel confident and good about yourself. If you feel uncomfortable wearing the bikini, then maybe wear a more supportive one piece. If you feel amazing wearing the bikini then go for it! You could always wear a flowy shirt over the top if you wanted to.

They're probably jealous of you! I'd go for it, wear the bikini. Lots of girls would die to have boobs like you! Anyway if someone says something like that about your appearance they're probably just insecure about themselves. Most of the mean girls and guys pick on others because they feel bad about themselves (not that they'd admit it ever!) I personally wouldn't worry about comebacks, don't go down to their level and show you atene immature like tempo. Anyway they're not with that effort. None should make a comment anyway, chances are that the whole idea won't even cross their mind! You're worried over nothing, it'll all be fine. Go have fun, I wish I could come with you! Louise.

Hey gals!!:D I, too, believe that each and every one of us have a talent, whether we know it or not. If anyone- or someone, does not like your stories, remember to NEVER give up! Haters will be haters. Don't let them get to you, or tell you that you can't write! But of course, be realistic... If you really can't write( which I never said so ), don't torture yourself either! To all of you out there: a talent is something that is god-given, don't expect to realize it immediately too. And a problem that I think everyone goes through is EXPECTATIONS & PRESSURE from parents; teacher etc...Know your strengths as you will never excel in anything you dislike:(

Try writing songs about things that make you happy! Then, if the song starts to get sad, just push the sad lyrics away and exchange them for happier ones. But remember, sad songs can be great, too! Just think about all of the great songs Taylor Swift has written... a lot of them are sad.

Hope I helped!

For the longest time (and still) I couldn't write about anything happy! We would be asked to write a short fictional story and mine would end up being either morbid or hideously depressing. I learned that that's just my writing style and I've embraced it! If your style is sad songs, so be it! Also, what you can do is give your sad songs an upbeat tempo. Lots of artists have horribly sad songs with a very catchy tune and a happy, bubbly speed. Hope I helped!

Hey guys! I need help!
Before I tell you my problem I need to tell you who I'm dealing with. There is a girl who has a group of friends just because shes "funny". She makes in inappropriate jokes, and assignes who sits next to her at the lunch table. yet, she's not popular. Just in that group. Ps. I'm making up names. The girl I'm dealing with is DQ. Anyways so I was friends with Roxy, and Sammi and Vicky. Then DQ tagged along and she was the star of the show. She needs all eyes on her, and causes bunches of drama! She made me sit all by myself because she was laughing with the kids at my table and the teacher blamed it on me! Now I need to ditch her. Me and Roxy are best friends and super close (and we don't get into trouble!) Were going into middle school and I don't want to deal with her drama. Just to give you an idea of what not to suggest here's a story.
One day I sat with the popular girls because one of my friends is one of them, and she wanted me to sit with them. DQ freaked. She completely ignored me during recess, told everyone in her group to leave if I was heading her way. Then she was in tears, saying I was a jerk, a sent a group of girls I disliked to come and say how bad of friend I was! I DID EVERY GROUP ACTIVITY WITH THIS GIRL I DIDN'T LIKE JUST TO KEEP HER HAPPY! then when I said sorry her response was "I DO ALOT TO KEEP MY FRIENDS HAPPY AND YOU PAY ME BACK LIKE THIS!!!!!' WHAT THE ........ And crud. Ps DQ stands for drama queen.

I totally encourage you to talk to her, but not just yet!:/ tell her that you are there for her, and that she has a shoulder to cry on:) DON'T pressure her into spilling on what happened, and ask her out or something... She will feel that
Everything is currently going at top speed because of this sudden death:(Make it an effort to dance delicately around the subject okay? Don't rush anything:) call or text, does not matter:) just let her know she has a friend<3

Ok first off, How do you avoid drama and embarrassing moments at school? I don't want any enemies this year and my worst nightmare is being embarrassed in public! Eeeek! What do I do?

Second, There's this highschool with an "arts" program really close to me and I really want to go to it 2 years from now when I'm in grade 9, But you need to audition for the arts program. My specialty is visual arts. The things you can choose from are Dancing, Music, Vocals, Acting and Visual art. But the problem is, hardly anyone from my school got in to the highschool for visual arts because all my school cares about is music! Don't get me wrong though, I LOVE music, but Ijust don't find it fair that my school doesn't support the other things! I do art classes out side of school, but I'm just scared that I won't stand a chance of making it in because there's so little support. :(

August 19, 2012 at 8:55 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

There might not be a sure way to avoid embarrassment. But there are tips I use to avoid some. Like bring a compact mirror with you so you can check yourself after class in case you have a booger or something in your teeth. Then always wear dark clothes on that time of the month. Or dark pants anyways. Don't do stuff like picking your ears or nose and avoid chewing your lips(I have made weird noises by doing it). Don't eat onions unless you have a breath mint afterwards. Never eat anything that may cause you gas. Double check your clothes to make sure nothing is showing.

Maybe you could talk to the activities director and ask about starting a visual arts club or something.

I'm entering this art contest and my parents saw last year's winners and they both said that i need to be more "out there"like they were. This really frustrated and irritated me because I have been working on this peace for 2 months and I thought I was finally getting it right. Also, they keep trying to say "Oh you should do this instead" and I keep telling them no thanks. It's really irritating because its my painting and they just think they can take over the whole thing and they keep telling me that im wrong. They totally doubt me and my vision and now I'm starting to doubt myself. Don't get me wrong though, they are awsome parents but they are driving me insane and I even told them before I started working on this project that I was doing it myself and I'm not supposed to have a parent leaning over my shoulder 24/7!!! This contest means alot to me. How do I get them to back off with the criticism as it is very anoying and I really don't want them to have any part in it anymore.

Thanks meme. I need more question answered. I gained wait, 17 pounds to be exact. I thought justice was cool last year, but I am totally not a Girlly girl now, and hate it. Plus I don't look good in them
My fat belly looks awful. Now my mom is yelling at me because some of the clothes were never even worn. It just didn't fit right. How do I tell her I need a whole new closet, my style has changed, and to take a chill pill, and that I just don't feel comfortable in it. Thx

Anonymous, I'm gonna call you Pinky. And this seems to be a prickly painters persnickety parents promblem.
:) Now, when youre parent says, That tree branch soon be longer, you respond "really? I don't think so. You see, if it's longer, it would mess the painting up, because it wouldn't look right with the flowerers therefore, if I took your advice it wouldnt complament my painting, just making it worse, particularly making my pieace I've been working hard on, less Likly to win. Thanks though." talking grown up, and acting like you know what you're doing would maybe be good. Or tell them no talking when you're painting so you can focus. Or just tell them "mom, dad, I've thankful for you're input On my project, but this is MY pieace so, I'f you would stop trying change it that would be nice.

ok. u like to write stories. well, i have my own way to tell a story. i make videos, and i write to, but mostly videos. i feel so strong about my serious videos and my serious stories, its easier to explain my world tht way. u c im not very...lets call it...explanitory, or open, about my feelings when it comes to speaking, so me and my best friend make videos based on songs we like, or i write it out in my secret journal. but u...everyone knows u like writing, ur just shy, me, i like to keep my feelings a mystery;) honestly if u have to guts to ask about it on the internet..u have guts to not care wat ppl think about ur stories, as long as u mean every word in that book, ull go a long way.i promise.

Purple panda:
First I think you should tell your mom how you're insecure about the new weight that you gained, and how the clothes don't fit right anymore. About the new clothes you never wore... I'm not sure. Sometimes you can sell clothes to consignment shops, but sometimes the shops will only give you money to use at their store. So if they give you money to use at their store, you can probably get a new wardrobe for less.

Hope I helped!-MeMe

Really.WOW! Im a writer too. Im trying to publish a book but it not finished yet. Its about a girl with a superior autobiogrophical memory who solves mysteries with her two best friends. The first book is called Cassidy McBeans and the Missing Forrtune. Ill give you guys a preview of the second book. Its called Cassidy McBeans and the Man with the Gray Suit. Here it goes:

"Look Toby I know this sounds crazy but Natasha and I saw your father with that cook in the suit" yelled Cassidy."They were talkiong about some anthole."
"You're crazy Cassie!"yelled Toby."You're jealous because my dad fired your dad."
"You know thats not the case" yelled Natasha holding Toby's shoulder."we're worried that you're in trouble."
Toby stormed out the room. But he rushed back in.And thats when the room filled up with water.

To Wallflower:
Hi! Here are some tips to help you get over your shyness.
-Smile. It might sound weird, but it's true. If you have a confident smile on your face, you will start to feel more confident.
-When you're in a room with tons of people you know, look for someone's who looks like they're a little shy. You can always say: "Hi, I'm________. What's your name?" or if you just joined the newspaper, "Do you like to write?"
If you find someone unfriendly, just move on!

-Find a group of friendly looking people. Go up to them. Chances are, if you don't first, they will introduce themselves and ask your name.

Hope I helped, Wallflower!
