Makeup - how much is too much?

Lots of girls are experimenting with makeup. Maybe it's just goofing around at home with friends. Or maybe your mom just said it was OK if you wear a little. But what's "a little?"

Answer Queen also has some questions about lip gloss, mascara and all that fun stuff:

Do you think you can do a question/blog thing about makeup? Like when and where you should wear it ? I don't know when to wear it like at school only? By the way, my mom bought me eyeliner mascara and lipgloss so she will let me wear it. I just don't want to wear too much though! I'm going into 8th grade and a lot of girls start wearing makeup now and I kind of want to wear a little, since my mom is letting me. I just don't know if you will do this question since the blog is mainly about puberty and lately bras but it really will help me thanks to whoever answers my question(:
Answer Queen Now Needs An Answer

Makeup is an interesting topic. For one thing, you don't have to wear it. You might try a little on and think, "Strange, that doesn't look like me!" Or you may try a little and think, "Hey, girl in the mirror, you look great!"

If you're one of those girls who likes makeup and want to wear a little, here's my best advice:

Start small! A little goes a long way with makeup. Usually, girls look best when they don't overdo it.
Practice! Using makeup is a skill (it's even a job), so it's OK if you don't apply it perfectly the first few times. Experiment on your own because you can always wash your face.
Get expert advice! There could be an expert in your very own family - your mom, grandma, older sister or aunt. Ask for some tips and maybe get their advice on colors and types of makeup. For an extra thrill, maybe a grownup can take you to a makeup store or department store counter. The people who work there know a lot about makeup and like to show you how to use it.

One more thing - and it's important. Take a moment to think about makeup and women, in general. When we wear makeup, we're participating in a very common practice - it's what women do in our society. It's considered normal to redden the lips, pink up the cheeks, and make our eyes more dramatic. But maybe it can be a negative. For instance, you don't see guys putting on makeup in the morning! And does it say that it's our JOB to be pretty?

I haven't figured it all out yet, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. I even heard of high school girls decided to make one school day week "no makeup day." Can you understand why? Would you participate in a day like that with your friends?

Think pink!

I honestly think that if your going to wear makeup, you should wear dark brown eyeliner (brunettes, and dark brown hair), or light brown eyeliner( blond or red hair), and subtle black( Dark black hair ). You can also wear a matching mascara. I think you can just wear chapstick or lipgloss with it. you can highlite your eyes if you want. Dont go overboard. Using these tips I posted should help you highlite your eyes. :) Good luck!

I personally don't LOVE wearing make up, but every now and again its nice to glam yourself up. But if you dont wear makeup yet and no one has mentioned it at school then you must be naturally gorgeous! Only wear what you feel is comfortable and feel good about yourself! xx

I absolutely LOVE putting on theatrical make-up to make me look like a vampire! I outline my reddened lips with black eye liner and draw teeth. then I put on foundation so I don't shine. Then I put a tiny line of dark colored eye shadow on my cheek bones and rub it in to make me look skinny and dead. Then I put black eyeliner on the bottom of my eyelids and on the top. Make a point on the end. Then I put a thick layer of eye shadow on and rub it all the way to my eyebrows. Then I put on a really thick coat of mascara and then I'm done! If you want to look normal, don't wear this in public!

P.S. I have seen 60's TV shows in which the girls put on WAY TOO MUCH EYE MAKE-UP!!!

If you want a more natural look, wear brown eyeliner instead of black. Plus you can barley see it because it looks like your natural eyes.

I want to cos my skin tone is uneven. (mild acne, baggy eyes, spots) My older sis started when she was my age so mum wouldn't say no but it's kinda complicated coz I can't ask her but Id have to buy it myself. She wouldnt take me shopping. My sisters would judge me and stuff. I don't want to overdo it, just mascara, gloss and either foundation or tinted moisturizer or concealer. I want to give myself more confidence. I don't wanna be unnatural, just highlight my features! My age is the time many start anyway, it's not silly for me to think this stuff is it? How do I get makeup guys! Sorry 4 length! :P

My dad would kill me if i wore make up in public, and my mum would probably laugh, i dont really mind though, its not like i could be bothered to put it all on in the morning. I sometimes wear lipgloss to parties and i would wear mascara if i had any. One time at camp i wore make up and i realised that my eyes were REALLY BIG! Anyway, im a big fan of really natural beauty.

To goldengirl of course its ok to think about this stuff. Almost all the girls in my class when i was 12 wore make up, some were younger. As a bit of a tomboy i am greatly embarassed by makeup, liking boys, wearing a bra etc. But as a girl its only natural to think about these things

I'm like Notmakeupi, I'm a big fan of natural beauty. I usually just wear a little lipgloss, but sometimes at parties it IS fun to glam it up. I say one big thing about makeup is to not overdo the blush. Also, make sure you apply it on the right cheek area. You can find out more online or from your mom or other woman.

I sometimes wear makeup for special occasions, but not to school or around the house. I tried it once, and it made me feel like I was just conforming with the pretty made-up girls. I'm fine with no makeup, I think if you want to wear it, do it, but if you don't really, you don't have to! There are plenty of girls who don't wear makeup. And I'm not saying wearing makeup is saying that you're just like those girls, but it's a choice! :)

It's really your choice how much makeup you wear, but I wear eyeliner on the bottom of my eyes, eyeshadow (same color as my eyes), mascara (black), powdered foundation to cover up zits and even things out, and clear lip gloss. If you are going for a more natural look, you could use brown-light brown eyeliner and mascara (the eyeliner would look more natural if you put it on the bottom), a natural color of eyeshadow like pink, light brown, or another color that blends with the color of your skin. If you have acne, I would use some form or type of foundation. Maybe use some light colored or clear lip gloss too.

I started wearing makeup at the age of nine and all I wore was mascara and Chapstick. I then moved on to eyeshadows and blush, lipsticks and lipglosses" but as long as they're natural colours, you can wear lots. Also tinted moisturiser helps you to look natural and wear makeup at the same time. This way you will won't look like you've caked it on! Your friend, girl that loves makeup!

When you go to the drugstore or any store really, with your mom just pass by it and start looking at them. Say, ooh this looks cool! Something like that, and she'll either say oh, do you want some? Or say no I think your too young. If you really want it, try to persuade her hahah(:

@Ashley You could
Passs the makeup thingy in the store, and show some interest. Be like "I think brown eyeliner is better than black, right, mom?" or "I think that this shade of blush would look good on me"

Tell your mom that you are really self conscious about your bags/pimples, and that you would REALLY like to try to cover them up.

I have half my makeup because of dance performances, so maybe tell your mom that you NEED this particular product for a show, performance, recital, or something like that.

If birthday/Christmas shopping for your mom/sister, buy something you want, and also something for them. You could accidentally 'lose' it before her birthday/Christmas.

Hope one of these helps!

It will take some practice! Maybe watch videos on YouTube . A very good practice method is to practice drawing curved lines in the shape of an eyelid on a paper!

@Diana10 Tell them to stop it, it's your choice wether you wear make-up or not, and tgey have no right to call you ugly, chances are its cause they are insecure with hemselves, if they carry on ignore them, talk to a counsellor or other grown-up, and make friends with the boys instead, but remember to always smile and at least pretend to be confident, as it will make you confident.☺ PS you might want to post your question on a newer post to increase your chances of getting other answers.
