Can someone force you to go on a diet?

Weight is such a personal issue. Some girls don't even like to get on the scale. We feel too fat, too thin, or we feel fine until someone else says something about our shape or size. Today's question comes from someone who chose the screen name ?. Let's see if we can help!

Dear PLS,
I really need help! Please!

I'm overweight, but not obese. My mom keeps talking about going on a diet and how I'm supposed to go on it with her. I have already said no but she is not taking no for an answer. I just don't understand how she expects me not to be mad. I thought that kids (unless they are extremely obese) are supposed to be worrying about diets!!! Is this even allowed? Is she allowed to force me into it? I really need some help I'm so upset! Neither her or my dad were overweight at kids (they are both overweight now) and they totally don't get it! What do I do?

The good news is that there are a few approaches ? can take:

1)Write her mom a note that explains her feelings.
2)Suggest they talk to the doctor about what is best. Often, kids don't need "diets" exactly.
3)Start some healthy habits, such as cutting out sugary drinks like lemonade, sweet tea, sports drinks, and soda. Also, keep track of how much you exercise, aiming for one hour a day.

Any other advice? Let's hear it!

Think pink!

Well....phewph. this is a tough one
1) your mum probably just wants you to be healthy. she cant force you, but if she starts buying only dietary foods, you will probably have to go alone with it.
2)Youre right,I dont really think that most kids should have to worry to much about their weight. If youre comfortrable in your own skin, tell your mum. say youre cool with the way you look.
3) talk about options rather than dieting. is there sports that you might like to try?
4) explain to your mum how you feel. she will probably understand.
5) i went on a diet before, and after i felt really good. it wasnt weight related, but i wasnt allowed ANY sugar for an entire month! it wastn so bad, once you get used to it. sometimes it isnt about losing weight, just about eating healthier and feeling good. if you stilll end up on the diet, it will be fine!

dont worry, be happy! think pink!

Your mom is just trying to do what is best for you! It's good to stay healthy, but your mom can't force you to do things. Maybe it would be better if you worked out a way you could do things a little different than usual, like have an hour of exercise a day or something. Hope it works out well!

Maybe you could (it was said already) cut down on sweets and do more exercise. Don't be ashamed, I do this also.

However you feel, you have the right to feel that way. YOU are living in your body, not your parents. Not to be mean to your parents, but you really need to tell them that a diet is NOT the thing for you. Just do what makes you feel the most comfortable.

I'm always confused about weight too. I am 5' 7" and Usuall weigh somewhere between 105 and 110 pounds. However, I ALWAYS feel subconcious about my weight. I have food BMI charts on the internet and found, many times, that I am a healthy weight. But still, no matter how much I tell myself that I am a fine weight, I always feel like I am too fat. My mom tells me that I should try to gain some weight, but that just stresses me out more. Since I feel fat, gaining weight isn't going to help me at all. And it just makes everything worse that there is this girl in my PE class who is ALWAYS talking about losing weight and how she wants to be no more than 95 pounds. All this is confusing me, and I know I'm not fat, but I still feel like the best thing to do is to try to lose weight. Still I am careful and eat when I am hungry (no crazy dieting) but i really am confused and don't know what to do.

Am I too skinny? I also have troubles with jeans. Even skinny ones are baggy. I keep losing weight for no reason too.

find a way to excersize and make it something you like. I play jumprope to excersize.Or maybe you can join a sport you like. whatever you choose just have confidence. You probably don't even need to diet.

Your mom probably doesn't understand that her comments make you feel this way! So, like Jemma said, write a note, or talk to her!

@Anonymous on October 12,
Lots of girls would give ANYTHING to have your shape! I'm short and I look like a box. So, do you know how to sew? Or does your mom? You can always hem your jeans :) or try looking in the junior section.
Hope I helped!

Hey dont worry so much about your weight and shape, as long as you eat healthy food ( and amounts) and do at least half an hour of excersise a day you should be fine. Have fun just being you! Hey, while we are teens our weight is going to be randomly changing, it is normal, however if you have serious concerns, you might want to visit a doctor to reassure you that you arent diabetic obese or anorexic. Smile and have confidence in yourself, wear clothes that make you feel comfortable in and remember everyone is built differently, so just because you are a certain age doesnt mean you are the exact average shape and size for it.

Eat more (healthy food obviously), or do a lot of excersise to gain muscle weight, or just weight, when you go through puberty you supposedly gain weight. Smiles!

Actually , the majority of my weight is already muscle and I eat A TON. I've been going through puberty since third grade or earlier and I don't naturally gain very much weight at a time. I have a high metabolism.

The best thing to do is go to the doctor and see if he/she says you are a healthy weight or not.
