Pad basics

Girls who are just starting puberty might know a few things about periods, but they often want to know more about pads. Who can blame them? It's an unusual new item that they'll need to keep on hand and eventually use themselves.

As a reminder, a menstrual pad, is a disposable rectangle of absorbent material. The soft side of these usually white pads has an adhesive strip. You peel off the paper - just like taking the paper backing off of a sticker - and you stick it to the middle of your underwear.

Here are two pad-related questions:

Dear PLS,
I was just wondering if u wear a pad even if u don't have ur period yet but u have had it before??
iflovecouldtalk, 10

Dear PLS,
My period started a few months ago.But when I put my pad in my panties my period goes to my panties instead of my pad.I started putting two pads at a time, but it didn't work. What do I do so my period doesn't stain my panties? Katherine, 12

Let's take Question 1 first. The answer is that most girls and women don't wear a pad every single day. During the week of their period, they would wear a pad or a tampon. But once the menstrual flow (blood) has stopped, you don't need a pad. However, some people like to wear a minipad during non-period times because of vaginal discharge. This isn't menstrual flow, but it's the regular, normal mucous stuff that girls may find in their underwear.

Question 2: Just like sooo many things, practice makes perfect. It takes some time to figure out how to wear pads so they're comfortable, placed in your underwear correctly, and changed often enough. It sounds like Katherine needs to investigate different kinds of pads (different absorbencies, thinner, thicker, wings vs. no wings etc.) It's kind of an experiment, making sure you have the right supplies for you and using them in a way that keeps you (and your clothes) protected. Remember that even older women who have been getting periods for years still accidentally stain their underwear or clothes once in a while. Just wash 'em out with cold water and soap and put them in the laundry. A little stain remove usually helps, too.

Want even more info about pads, check out this Pads & Tampons article.

@iflovecouldtalk, you dont wear a pad when youre not on your period, however, lots of girls choose to wear a pantiliner, to, as jemma said protect you from discharge, and of course, to offer a little bit of protection if you get your period unexpectedly, as is the case with most girls just starting out. If you would like to wear them ask your mum about it.

@Katherine, if you feel that practice isnt helping you might want to consider "period panties" that are especially absorbent, and made for your period (i havent tried them but alot of people recommend them), or another form of protection, such as a menstrual cup, if you feel ready for it, as they are supposed to cause less leaks (havent tried these either). Whatever you choose Smile!

If your pad isn't absorbing as we'll as it should, try a maxi pad. They are thicker, with more absorbency. My advice is to stick to pads, panty liners, and tampons. Here are some good brands- Pads: Always Ultra thin pads
Panty liners: Always ultra thin panty liners, U by Kotex
Tampons: Playtex sport, Kotex pearl

Don't be embarrassed! There are many other girls out there (like me) who are going through the exact same things as you. I am also 12 and have had all the signs that I might Be getting my period. But I haven't yet. If you are worried about unexpectedly getting your first period, what I do is just carry around some pads in your backpack or purse. Then if it happens, you'll be ready. Good luck!!!

@anonymous october 21-dont worry u dont have to be embarrased periods usually start to a girl between ages of 9 through 15 i have a cousin who is 13 and still hasnt had her period yet.

anonymous october 21 (later)-about skinnier people that get their periods late it really depends how developed your body is ,although its true that girls who have more fat in their body get their periods earlier.

advicegirl-i dont have my period yet so i wont be much help to u but u could try putting your pad a bit farther back.

anonymous october 21 1:09-look dont think just ask and simply say ''mom i was wondering if i could wear a pad because my discharge feels uncomfortable''then u can talk it out since the words are already there out i the open.

Hi, lately I've been feeling the same way! Just totally stressed out and on the verge of crying all the time. This always happens to me the week before opening night of a play. I suggest, on a weekend when you don't have much to do, just sit and listen to music and read, or knit, or whatever. Also, talk to your family about how you don't like it when they correct your violin playing. My sister used to correct me all the time when I sang, played viola, or piano, and it made me not want to do it anymore. They probably have no idea it affects you so much!
Hope I helped :)

I thought I was the only one!!
I've been so crabby, and I'm having a rough time at school, plus my parents are fighting tons and out of money. I've almost quit my passion, because, like you, I cant handle the corrections or remarks that I could have usually handled fine.
So, I have some tips.
1) Dont give up on violin, just practice it out of the way of everyone, or lock your door, so no one can upset you.
2) Try cutting down on your activities. Maybe theres one that you dont enjoy very much anymore? Or maybe you dont have to do that one everyday?
3) When you feel upset, I'm glad talking to your mum helps, but also try keeping a diary. It might sound r girlie, but I find that if you write something down it often stops bothering you. Leave your worries on paper!
4) Try eating good foods and going to bed earlier, so your not tired or hungry. Sometimes thats the reason for irriatableness.

Sorry for the long response, but I hope I helped!

My first period story is this; it was an ordinary cloudy, cold and wet saturday in the middle of november (2011), and my best frenemy, little brother and i had biked to the outdoor museum/zoo type thing, and had a wonderful time, we biked home and my frenemy left at around 8. My mum was taking a shower and i was getting ready for bed. I went to the toilet (my mum was drying herself now) and sat down, then i looked at my knickers, and they had a brown stain in them, i was horrified and thought "im too young and im never going to get as tall as my mum!" (13 3/4 years, 5"5 mum 5"7, she got it at 14) i also thought, "all that reading up on how to tell my mum for nohing" and showed them to her, she was like "uh-oh, looks like weve had a visitor, and measured her pads against my knickers and gave me one, told me how to put it on and told me to shower, i showered put on the pad and wrote in my little used diary about it. That was my not so dramatic first period, noone noticed, and i was just surprised that it was brown, not brownish. Smiles

Vaginal dischare is a gooey clear to quite fluid that comes out Of your vagina. You will often find it in your underwear, an it usually begins around Six months to a year before you get your period. I it bothers you you can wear panty liners or something that. But be aware that different things happen at different times and just because your friend got her period after a few months of discharge doesn't mean you will. I have been getting dischare for three or four years and still haven't gotten my period :)

You're welcome! I have been wanting my period Gor a while too. I am 12 years old. I mainly want it just because based on the signs and stuff I should have had my period for a while. I have had to wear a bra for almost 3 years, have had "hair down there" for around 2 or 2 1/2, and have had discharge for 3 or 4. I am always prepared with sine pads, though just in case today's the day.

I just got my period a few months ago. My mom only lets me use pads cause she said that tampons are for grown ups only and non virgins.Im only three days though. I got lucky!!! But the brands i use are
U by kotex teen
Always teen
Get the teen kind cause they are more comfy and better for little girls like us.
Im only 11 and i already got it.

Hey, I am like totally OBSSESSED with periods. I wonder and think about them all the time, and really want to get mine. Is that strange or wrong or weird in some way?

No, it's not too weird. Lots of girls are just like you and they think and wonder about periods too. It's probably just because you really want and are excited for your period so you always think about it and when it will come. Trust me, I had the same problem. When I first started to have discharge, every time I felt a liitle wet, I would go to the bathroom and check if Mother Nature had finally visited me. When my period actually came, I was definitely not thinking about it and I was shocked to see it so you probably will not expect yours when it hits either!
Keep Calm and Stay Prepared ;D........LOL!

I am not sure if I have puberty. I am 12 years old and I have pubic hair growing and I have tiny breast that are growing. I am not prepared about period because my mum would should at me if I dared to ask her about keeping spare pads in my school bag. At school, we are learning about growth and development and if I compare myself with all the girls in my class, the they are all starting tho have period in a couple of months. I am so sad.:(

Yes, you are experiencing puberty.

It can be hard to tell, since it is only your first one. For me, my lower stomach was cramping. I did not know that it was my first period until I saw the blood in my panties. When you are a couple of months into having periods, like myself, I think that it starts to get easier to know when you will have another period. I have cramps and headaches like a few days before my period so that is how I know it is about to start. I can also sometimes feel wet or you will actually feel the blood...... I know sounds gross but true......

I am 12 years old and I am starting to have puberty. I also think that I am having vaginal discharge. So can you predict when I will have my first period? Thank you.

It's hard to tell when ur first period will come. Some people say it will come two years after your breast startdeveloping. Others say after you get discharge t may be 6 months to a year away, but that isn't always the case. Some girls get it around the same time a mom or sister got hers. There many ways to tell a rough estimate of when it will come but remember everyone girl is different. Hope I helped :) ~hugs and smiles~ THINK PINK! 

@Dilisha
You can't really predict when you have you're period. But, you can be prepared. Ask your mom to by you pads just in case. Hope it works!

have pads stashed in you backpack or something, and get the pads with the "butterfly wings" so you can almost tape them to your underwear.

Ugghhhh... Happy day:( Not really! Just started my period AGAIN yesterday. I'm sooooo irregular- November I had it 2 times and don't even talk about September or October- it was so heavy. Yeah, period #5 and the heaviest yet. I was so eager to start and now that I have I wish I wasn't so anxious. Girls out there who want ur period to happen soon enjoy the time u have without it- it's not fun. I need an energy boost-literally! I hope won't have my period the week I go to the beach in July - no way do I want 2 use tampons.

With periods, you dont always follow in your mother's footsteps, I guess you could say...
I asked my mum because I was worried and she said she had her first period at 13.... so I used to think that on my 13th birthday (I am only 11) I would get my period. Yeah, not the case. I know a girl who had her first period like, and hour before midnight, her 15th birthday.

Enough babbling, I do that alot.

So, I just want to say, don't wait for your period, enjoy life without it! I don't have my period yet, and I am VERY happy because I am going swimming all day for Christmas :)
