Getting along better with Mom & Dad

Life gets more complicated as you get older. Think about this: Your parents knew you when you were just a teeny tiny baby. Awwww, you were sooooooo cute! You grew up little by little and now you have ideas of your own. Maybe you don't always agree with your parents. No one loves to be reminded to Do this/Don't do that! But that's what parents do and it's their job.

It's normal to disagree with parents sometimes. Do you ever feel like you're not as close with your Mom or Dad as you once were? That's how jaedyn and PopcornMunch are feeling today. Let's see if we can help!

Dear PLS,
I really am a fan of you web. I am so thankful you are doing these things for teen girls around the world p.s me and my mom use to be really close til i turned 9. Now we fight. I want to be close again. Give me some help please.
jaedyn, 11

Dear PLS,
My dad and I have just had a big falling out, and we refuse to talk to each other. I have bought him a Christmas present, because I love him, but I'm not sure he'd appreciate it. I don't know what to do because my dad is my best friend, he always makes me laugh, but sometimes I feel like he doesn't care. Please help me work this out.
PopcornMunch. X

I love these two questions because it's clear how much jaedyn and PopcornMunch love their Mom and Dad. Even better, they both want to have better relationships with them. And here is the great news: It's the perfect time of year for starting over.

I think jaedyn and PopcornMunch should do this:

1. Say "Happy New Year!" to their Mom and Dad
2. Give them a big hug or smooch.
3. Say I want us to get along better in 2013 and I'm willing to work at it.

Any other advice for getting along better with the parents?

Think pink!
Jemma

Tell your parents that you love them every 5 minutes and give them lots of hugs (you need a minimum of 4 hugs a day to be healthy, and parents love hugs!) And kisses. Everytime one of you leaves the house. My dad and i dont always see eye to eye (my mum says its cause we are too similar) but i love him anyway and tell him all the time. Daddy's girls rock! Smile and love everyone!

Try to be as nice as possible and if they tell u to do something, do it because u want to be on their good side. Try to talk to ur parents more. Deep down u know they will always love u and care about u.

I think that is absolutely precious! It is great that you feel this way about your parents! I personally love my parents, they are my best friends (besides my twin sister). I know that God will do something great for both of your families becauase of the love you have for your parents. Happy holidays!!!!

be super nice and helpful...and don't always argue...just accept some of your mom's/dad's decisions...and try seeing things their way..if you know you are right for a fact, then just gently/nicely tell them that you think you are right be more open..:D

Sometimes I feel like I'm taking care of my family more than they are of me. I turn off my parents lights when they stay up too late and fall asleep, I babysit my little brother and sister practically every night, and for free. I'm constantly waiting on my dad. I've literally raised myself.

Hey PLS gals- I need some advice. Every piece of clothing that my mom gets me is at least a size too big. How would I tell her that I'm not an XL?

just tell your mom the truth . she will understand . she might be a little angry that you did not tell her before because she wasted so much money on clothes that were to big. dont worry she will be happy you told her .

Well usually when u get clothes, u try them on. When u try it on, show her and tell it its to big and that u need a smaller size. Tell her the truth.

Hi guys. I'm having a bit of trouble. So I'll get right to it. I consider myself a bit of a wallflower. I try to put myself out there but its just not me. I really like art; it's where I get most of my confidence from. And I'm also really trying to except comments instead of turning them down. But now, my mom wants me to open a blog with me sharing all my art, but she just doesn't get it! I don't want attention now. Don't get me wrong though, I really hope that one day I'll be discovered, it's just well I don't like spotlight... at all. I have it hard enough trying to look someone in the eyes when I'm talking to them, this is just to big of a step. So anyways, she's already taking pictures and stuff! How do I explain that I don't really want to do it yet. I can already hear her now saying "Well you can't get into that art school if you don't do something like this!" But I just dunno. It's not me. Help?

Hey guys. I was just wondering. Does anyone know how to be yourself? I know I must sound absolutely ridiculous right now, but I'm dead serious. People always say, be yourself! But I think we all know its not that easy. Personally, I feel like I have a billion different versions of myself, but lately I just feel like I modelled myself into a completely different person. I've been acting like preppyMc.preppyson! And I know this will probably sound like some obnoxious fake cheesy movie, but I literally forgot who I am! What I'm like and I wanna go back to being me! That changed in the 5th grade and I wanted the boys attention, but it never happens so I just realized, why am I trying? I feel so stupid! I should just except it shouldn't I? I feel like I have only one friend who really sees who I am and I really am grateful for him, but I wish the world could see that person too, if I wasn't so shy and knew how to show it!

Btw, I'm the same anonymous with the blog problem and I'm in the 7th grade. Thanks guys.

Also for anonymous
When people say to be urself, u just have to be natural. Just say the first thing that comes to ur head if u have to answer a question, or if u had to do something, do it exactly how u would d it. Let lose and show ur personality, not someone elses.

@Anonymous w/the blog problem
Tell your mother before she starts the blog. If you wait, it may be too late. She should understand that it is too much for you to handle and you are not ready for something like this yet. Explain to her your feelings. After all, she is doing it for you, not her so if you don't like it, what's the point of doing it?
Also being you is natural like cutiepie4eversophie said. But doesn't everyone say that? It could be pretty hard to understand sometimes. Being you is just being independent. Do, be, feel, and think how you wnat to and don't let anyone change that. Especially not boys!!! Be you and you will shine! I promise! Your personality is what makes you you! Why change it?! IT IS THE ONE OF THE ONLY THINGS THAT MAKES YOU PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@anonymous ; It's ok. I had this problem myself. You may not realize this, but with all of the things you described, you actually might be bieng yourself. Sometimes, people change, and you might be. Otherwise, just act natural. Try to just remember that you are you, and nobody can change that. If your friends or classmates notice and ask you about your change, tell them "This is how I am, and if you don't like it, I can't do anything about it!" I hope this helps:)

I dont hink that is stupid! Especially since so many people say, "be yourself" and then dont do it themselves lol! I have never had this problem since i hav been myself all my life (once a guyfriend told me i was weird, cause i was myself, seriously! How about before you say or do something you ask yourself, why? Is it cause i want to or like it, or is it what everyone else is xpecting me to do? Try to find yourself and your confidence again, forget about what everyone else thinks, just be yourself, but dont be mean! ( this migh also help with starting a blog) For now try to Smile and Be Confident!

If I change it I will post it but I doubt it will! I really hope this helps! That is what I do and it always works unless you do it wrong in a demanding way. Say it nicely. Say it mean.... If it really scares you, you have to tell someone you trust that won't make a huge deal out of it. Someone that would care enough to help. If you are brave enough, tell your parents your feelings. (obviously when they aren't drunk)

My parents and I still fight sometimes, but it was mostly with my dad over stupid things. I found a way that improved our relationship, so now we don't immediately start fighting. I realized that I wasn't meeting my dad half way. He tried to do things with me that I liked, but I didn't do anything with him that he did. I felt misunderstood, then one day I decided to try something he liked, and I ended up really enjoying it! It made him really happy, and we immediately bonded
