Discharge - What you need to know

Girls have tons of questions about vaginal discharge. And, in my opinion, they should worry less about it. Here's why:

  • Vaginal discharge (clear to off-white in color) is normal. It means your body is working the way it's supposed to.
  • You don't need to wear a minipad - but you can if you want to - because the small amount that will get on your underwear will come out when they are washed.
  • Vaginal discharge continues even after a girl gets her period, so might as well get used to it.

It's understandable that girls notice this change in their bodies - especially because it's an early sign that a girl's first period is on the way. Some girls notice it more but everyone gets it. And like everything with puberty, it kind of works on its own schedule. Doctors say vaginal discharge appears about 6 months to 1 year before a girl gets her first period.

But if you are ever itchy, in pain, or notice a change in the discharge, you need to tell a parent. That can be a sign of infection and you might need medicine to clear it up. Read more about changes in discharge HERE.

Think pink!

Thank you for this post Jemma! I was just going to ask a question about it, which I'll ask anyway.. I've been getting light brown discharge lately. Most of the time it's like you mentioned--clear--but sometimes it's a tan color (ew sorry if that's TMI). I really need help with this so someone please answer!!

yes,it's normal to be getting heavy discharge if it's been two months and it's normal to be irregular, once there was a girl who did not have a period for 4 months and she was fine!!! :)

Hmm...well, I don't have my period yet. I heard that if you get brown discharge it's because you're just about to get your period. I'll keep an eye out for it and see if I get it again. Thanks!

@Anonymous, (I think two comments above me) Yes, I definitely think that it is discharge. Dont worry, as you can probably tell, it happens to everyone. Its just another sign of puberty. It usually does start in very small amounts, mine came and then would go away again at the begining. Hope I helped. :)

@Chocoholic JR.

I dont mean to scare you, but it does sound like your going to get it soon. The mood swings sound like PMS (pre menstraul).

Yes, it can be kind of freeeaky! You've just got to always remember that a 100,000 women before you have felt this way. And all of them got over it, and now their period is just a pain in the butt, nothing to be scared of.

Try figureing out WHY youre nervous. Is it because your afraid of it coming at school? Maybe your embarassed? Nervous about having to talk to your mum?

Actually, that will probably be the easiest part. Come out flat, probably soon, that you either A) got your period or B) needs some pads to be prepared.

Plus, she will be able to help you with being nervous about your period. Tell her how you feel (Count to three, take a breath if your uncomfortrable) and she will probably be the best advice ever!

GIRL POWER! (especailly if you read this super long commetn :P) Good luck buttercup!
