Period questions from Tori and Cheryl

Period questions! Seems like everyone has them. Here are two from Tori and Cheryl.

Dear PLS,
“I haven't had my period yet and I'm kind of worried. Its kind of embarrassing when I talk to someone about it. What do I do?”
Tori

Hi Tori! A girl's period, also known as menstruation, begins about 2 to 2½ years after her first signs of puberty. On average, girls get their period around the age of 12, that is not the only age! It can come earlier or later, until the age of 16. If possible, talking to your Mom about it may help. She can tell you about her story of puberty

Find more info here: When Will I Get My Period?

And now for Cheryl's question...

Dear PLS,
I just got my period, and at school my pad feels so uncomfortable. It may sound weird but it kind of feels wet, even though there's probably little blood on it. Are there any tips for me to be comfortable with my pads?”

Cheryl

If your pad feels uncomfortable, your mom or sister can help you find a pad that fits more comfortable. At the store, the feminine products are usually located in one aisle, where you will find different types of pads. If you can, try a few different ones out before deciding which kind you want to use.

Eventually, you may want to use tampons which are comfortable when you feel ready to use them. Get more info here:

Pads and Tampons

Any additional advice, Pink Locker girls?

Think pink!

Hey Jemma could u please answer this question:
How do I ask my mum to wear training bras of crop tops

The reason why is because:
1. My school top is super see through and singlets are way too annoying to tuck in all the time
2. The feel more comfortable
3. It is developing up here!

@tori...dont worry its ok if ur around girls who r talkin about it then just walk away n avoid them. every girl will get it eventually it depends on ur body. dont let it get to u.. besides u should count urself lucky that u dont have it yet..it comes with more than jus ''fitting in'' it comes with pain..so yeah once u get u'll b glad to find out when its over...thats how i feel..

@ Cheryl...
hi!! if u dont feel comfortable with the pad that u have then u should try gettin a different kind..such as ones with wigs..i think they r bunt scrunch up in the middle...if u feel it gets wet easily then u should get a heavier type of pad

OHMYGOSH. Don't worry for both of you! I just got my period a few months back! But, before, literally every girl in my grade got their period already and I'm just like, COME ON. COME ON. I don't want to be the last girl to get it! But, don't worry! You'll get it soon, I'm sure! Don't worry though. I was really sad that I didn't get my period because my friends all got theirs and talk about it and I'm just like,"Mmm. Yeah, I didn't really get mine yet, soo..." But worse comes to worse, talk to your best friend or sister about it. Your mom is the best choice, but it's really awkward, but try it! Mothers are always understanding.

For Cheryl, OMG. I had these really awful pads that felt all thick and whatever and gross. It felt like it doesn't absorb the blood. Try Always Infinity pads. They don't feel gross as much as other ones. They absorb the blood and if you feel like it doesn't absorb and you check it and the blood and other gross stuff is just sitting on top of it, change your pad. Don't worry also when you get it and feel like,"I can't bear to put my legs together, so I'll walk around like a penguin", try not to, or put a sweater around your waist. I think it helps a bit. Try it in the mirror though before you go out. And uh... I'm trying to think of other things but, yup that's all I got. :)

Good luck to the both of you. :*

Hey Jenny! I totally know how you feel! I had the same problem! If the blood is really lite, then I would reccomend "U by Kotex barely there" If it is heavy then I would just try the averege pad :-\ . If you feel that you're ready for a tampon, I would talk to you're mom about trying a VERY small one, and seeing how that works out :-) Good luck girl!

Oops, I meant Tori. not Cheryl. But now I will answer Cheryl's question.
Cheryl, there are other things than pads! You could use a tampon, which in a swimming suit or sports uniform it isn't visible. It absorbs the blood before it leaves you body, and you can pull it out when you want to.
You could shop for a different type of pad brand, but I strongly believe that tampons are good 4 u.

Today at school, I got this letter from a guy. It had all sorts of sweet stuff written about me. The guy also wrote that he likes me for a long time. It didn't have any kind of name signed on it , it just said he is my secret admirer. I know that guy's not from my grade because he wrote that his feelings rush back when he sees me at lunch. Wow, it quite exciting to have a secret admirer !!!! I really wanna know who this boy is. Can it be my crush? I hope it is. But I'm kinda scared that it's just my friends trying to pull my leg. It was handwritten, and the handwriting seemed very familiar to me. My friends swore it wasn't them. I really wanna know who can like me, this bad, but what if it is some dorky guy who's the last person I'd wanna hang out with? How do I know who this guy is????? I need some fast advice !!!!!!!!!1

even if it is a dork give him a try. Dorks are usually smart and maybe he can help you with homework. Give him a chance. like maybe a month the if it still doesn't work let him down easy. I'm really sorry but I don't think it will work out. Other ways just play it by ear. see what happens. I do not know if it is for you but it is almost the end of school for me so if it is it wont really matter. I hope this helps. This is all the advice. Have any more questions? Just ask me?

Rainbows'n'sunshine12: 1: Maybe you are pressing down too hard,
2: There isn't really a right way, just be very gentle and only shave when your legs/underarms are wet,
3: Some people like to shave every few days, but some people only shave every few weeks!
4: I don't really know...
5: When shaving, there are always tiny hairs left! They only go away completely if you wax.
6: Shave them completely, but after you shave, for your information, your hair comes back more coarse and dark.
7: Those holes are normal, I don't really know if you can get rid of them!
8: It's kind of hard to explain, sorry! :(

After more practice shaving, it becomes easier and you get better at it.

Hope I helped!

Hi Rainbows'n'sunshine12,
I've never used veet or nair... they're creams that some women use because it fully removes hair, instead of leaving a little stubble like shaving does. I'm sorry, I don't really know much about it, but they both have websites that you can Google that give you more information.

Sorry!

So me and my crush were outside one on one and he asked for my # or Facebook or Instagram contacts and the thing is.... I don't have a phone! It would be totally embarrassing to tell him that so I told him "later". I told my mom and she said I can give him the home phone #. It has buttons, it doesn't txt, it can only call. I want to have his number!!!! But I don't want to humiliate myself. Btw, mom promised me a phone after summer pasts. What will I do.

Should I use a pink, green, purple or blue pen to sign his yrbook or a blue sharpie. Thx!!!

No, I dont think so. But some discharge can come from vaginal infections. Some symptoms that I remember are: green or yellow-y dishcarge, a bad odour, a cottage-cheese consistancy. If you recognize those, your discharge may be a sign of infection, not your period. Talk to your mum! She might need to take you to a 'lady doctor'.

Ill do my best to help!!

Those 'holes' you get after you shave are possibly from pressisng too hard. Your blades are so sharp, you hardly need to push.

Underarms are a hard shape to shave. Sometimes when theres spots Im missing, I'll sort of pull at my skin until I can see it when I shave.

Knees are also hard. I stick my leg out so its not bent, which makes it easier.

I shave every 3-ish days. You usually only stay HAIRLESS for the first day, and after that the stubble starts to show. I let mine go until it feels rough when I run my hand over it. I only need to shave my thighs (which for some reason stay hairless longer) every 5-6 days.

My tip for not missing spots is to cover your whole leg in a thick, visisble layer of soap or gel. Then, every time you make a stroke of your razor, you can see where it went. Dont stop until theres no more soap/gel on your leg.

Same here girl!! But I researched it and everyone is diffrent. It can take six months to a year ON AVERAGE until your period. Ive had my discharge for almost 2 years now. Lets just think of ourselves as above average. And think about it there are MILLIONS UPON MILIONS of girls out there. Be happy that you dont have to live with the insane hormones just yet. It also depends on you age. My grandmother didnt start her period until she was 15. A good sign to know if your close to starting your period is checking your discharge and it be much thicker than normal. ~Rissa p.s. Hope the advice helped love :)

Trust me, boys don't always like us, at least for me. Last year I didn't have any admirers either. There might be secret admirers that like you. This year was complete drama. Sometimes i wish this guy wouldnt like me i mean, he stalks me, memorized my schedule, mysteriously has my phone number ugh. Sure, I was maturer but same ol me :)
My advice would be try to be nice to everyone and smile at anyone who looks at you in the hallway and just be a great person to be around. Be kind of funny and outgoing. Love who you are. If guys don't like you, it doesn't mean you're not pretty or popular. Their loss if they don't like an awesome girl like you. Now, I'm not asking you to change yourself, sometimes the best you is you!
Hope I helped!

How thick are the hairs on your leg? If their still blonde/pale, don't worry! But, if youre feeling self conscious about the hairs you should talk to your mum. Ask her why you aren't allowed. A common reason is 'You're too young!' Talk to her about how you are growing up, and your body is changing, so its a good idea to shave.
Good luck buttercup!

Oh trust me, someone likes you! The younger you are though, the less obvious it is. You don't have to find out who it is (it doesn't really matter) but someone DOES like you, and you just have to remember that. Lots of times, it could be someone you hardly know, which is why you might not notice.

@Anonymous you could try a heating pad and put it on your stomach. Cramps are caused by the muscles in your uterus contracting, so try to lay back and relax :) If discharge is a pain you can use panty liners, which are like a smaller version of a pad. Best of luck!

Don't even worry bout it! I find that the period in the day time like at school or out shopping stuff like that I find it the easiest! The hard part that I find is the nights and keeping track of when I'm gonna have it! I find that tampons are better but use whatever feels better for you! Anyways try to wear dark pjs when your on your period like at night time and if you have dark blankets and stuff that's good too! My mom totally understands and it's really easy to get out all ya do is put stain remover on it! Anyways schools fine when ya have your period I have to change my tampon once at school but that's just me it might be more of less for you anyways hope I helped and didn't make if sound worse... But ya all in all it's not that bad!

Cheryl, I agree with Jemima about tampons. They might feel better for you. You can also try a different brand, because there's plenty! (I like Always) Or thinner ones, which I find much more comfortable. Otherwise, you could try to get used to it. When I started my period I HATED the way pads felt. After a while though I felt more comfy.

If you are just starting out, your flow may be rather light, if so you could try a liner like Kotex Tween, or U by Kotex brands work great. Pads are uncomfortable which sucks =^_^= unfortunately, every girl knows what its like!
If your flow is heavier, then maybe try tampons!

Im 13.5 years old. I have had discharge for 1.5 years. I have had hair (down there) for a while, I have been developing breasts for about 2 years. I have mood swings and the worst cramps ever. Yesterday my cramps were really bad and I went to the bathroom and noticed two minuscule dots of red. I also had a slightly pink discharge. But I haven't gotten my period yet, is something wrong with me?

@courtney: yes the doctor can sorta predict that stuff. (cool right?) but no need to worry. all those signs mean your period is coming very very very soon. when your doctors appointment comes, or has come:), they will probably tell you when it will come. if they still dont know, never fear! my friend has all the signs too and she has for 2 years and still no period!!!

Hello everyone,my codename is wynterfell and im 11 years old.today when I went to use the bathroom todo my duty, when I wiped my bottom i saw a little bit of blood on my tissue going in the direction to my vagina. When I wiped my vagina gently i found blood mixed with my discharge. I told my mom she gave me some pads, after the incident i didn't see anymore blood after that. Is this normal? Am I getting signs of my period? Is there more blood in a few hours? Help!

annonomous about croptops/training bra

well, i had the same prob! what i did was i had a few traininbg bras but they were pink. So i said "hey..ma? why do i have these?" (holding up pink training bra) she said "dont u wear them under v-necks/" i said no and she said "oh. well u should wear something soon...we will pick a few up at the mall this weekend" and left! so try that approach. If u dont have one, try this: "mom, can i get a bra" (while at a store tht sells bras) "some of my shirts, the lining is itchy on the top so it would help." hopefully i helped!

to Anonymous,
who said" I haven't had my period and I'm 10 years old."( First of all I am a girl so don't worry 'cause you said GIRLS ONLY :) So lets start here, just because someone's breast started developing doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to get
their periods right then (-no offense) but breast development occurs in the puberty stage. Just to let you know girls get their periods some time
during the stage once they've attended it. Do not
worry, females get there periods at different times than others and i don't believe there is anything anyone can do to get theirs' at a certain time but,
again, don't worry you will probably get yours sometime. So don't worry and relax girl. And a
few more things just to let you know since i am telling you this: If your periods doesn't come by the
time you are 16, then there might be a problem. If
this eventually happens(not saying that it would),
then you should atleast tell your mom and try to
see the doctor, but relax, you might get yours.
Sorry, i am not the pls. None of this is a lie
and i am not kidding so please trust me!,
Hope this helps! :-)- CHEERS SMILE! CHILL!
I hope you get yours

I am in 5th grade and we are goig to watch the puberty video soon and I am really nervous about having my periods. I mean what if they happen in school and everybody sees me? Do you have any advice?

April 11, 2014 at 8:09 PM
Anonymous justaCarlee said...

but here is some advice, don't worry cuz everyone
gets periods its normal and if you take pads or
tampons with you and put them on just in case,
your periods are not going to leak out, therefore,
no one is going to see or realize it, not trying to
embarass you, hope I helped,
think pink,

Oh! And one more thing. I totally get you. When all of my friends are talking about all o their dilemmas or whatever, it's very obvious that I'm standing their like an awkward....prune XD. I just really hope that we can grow soon...it is seriously annoying ... And people are like oh it sucks but it sucks for us too. We watch everyone else, being confident with their body an growing normally and i personally really hate wearing tigh clothes are going swimming now. I can go with my family, but not my friends. Sorry this is long, but your the only one who is in the same boat as me who is commenting on his blog. Stay strong sista
